There are plenty of things to do in Osaka with kids. Playful by nature, Osaka is an eclectic city of bright lights, big flavours and hands-on fun, with everything from world-class theme parks to arcades and interactive museums scattered across its neighbourhoods.

One minute you’re riding rollercoasters, the next you’re snacking your way through Dotonbori or battling it out in a claw machine arcade. The best part? Most experiences appeal to adults too.  Consider this Urban Lists's go-to guide to exploring Osaka with the whole family.

Universal Studios Japan

If you do one big-ticket activity, make it USJ. Spend a full day zooming from rides to parades, themed restaurants and immersive worlds that hit across generations. Younger kids (roughly preschool to early primary) will get the most out of gentle rides and character zones like Minion Park and Super Nintendo World, while older kids and teens will gravitate toward thrill rides at the Jurassic Park area. The standout across all ages is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which feels like stepping into a film set.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Widely considered one of the best aquariums in the world, Kaiyukan is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for animal lovers of any age. Built around a towering central tank, the experience spirals downward through different marine environments, giving the illusion you’re descending into the ocean depths. Along the way, you’ll spot over 30,000 creatures across 620 species; keep an eye out for the aquarium’s enormous whale sharks in the main Pacific Ocean tank.

Tombori River Cruise

A great way to see Dotonbori from a totally different angle, the Tombori River Cruise is a 20-minute ride under the city's nine landmark bridges. You can glide along the central canal on a low boat while giant billboards, restaurants and the iconic Glico sign flash by at eye level. It’s quick enough to hold little ones' attention spans, and for parents, it’s an easy way to rest your feet while still sightseeing.

Legoland Discovery Center Osaka

For younger kids, Legoland Discovery Center Osaka is a no-brainer. This indoor attraction has rides, creative building zones and interactive play areas, all centred around—you guessed it—LEGO. One of the highlights is Miniland, where Osaka’s landmarks are recreated in intricate miniature form. It’s not huge, but it’s an excellent spot to drop in on a rainy day.

Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel

The vibrant, brightly lit giant ferris wheel towers over Osaka Bay at nighttime.

Right next to the aquarium, you can’t miss the giant ferris wheel towering over Osaka Bay. At just $8 per person (or free for children under three), the 15-minute ride is smooth and slow, making it ideal for younger kids, while the panoramic views keep adults just as entertained. Feeling bold? Opt for one of the transparent, glass-bottom cabins for an added thrill.

Den-Den Town

A playground for gamers and pop culture fans, Den-Den Town is packed with arcades, trading card shops, manga stores and cosplay culture. Kids will beeline for the gachapon machines lining the streets, coin-operated capsules filled with everything from quirky figurines to miniature collectibles for about $2.50 a pop. For teens, head into arcades like Taito Station for claw machines and games, or browse specialty hobby stores like Yellow Submarine.

Visit A Temple Or Shrine

Slowing things down with a visit to a temple or shrine is a great reset when travelling with kids in Osaka. These spaces are open, calm and visually striking, which helps keep little ones interested without needing constant stimulation. A great option is Namba Yasaka Shrine, famous for its enormous lion head stage that looks straight out of a Studio Ghibli film. Another easy stop is Shitennoji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest temples, with wide grounds perfect for wandering. A temple stop is also an easy way to bring a bit of culture and history into your itinerary.

GiGO Dotonbori

Three floors of fun for kids (and kids at heart), GiGO Dotonbori is the largest game centre in Osaka. The ground floor is a wall of claw machines stocked with plush toys and anime figurines, while upstairs you’ll find a full arcade setup with racing games, rhythm challenges and photo sticker booths. Located in the heart of Dotonbori, it’s a great spot to take a break from all of the eating and shopping.

Kids Plaza Osaka

Located in the Kita district, this interactive museum is packed with hands-on exhibits designed to entertain and educate young kids, without feeling like they’re at school. Let them can solve puzzles, play instruments, explore cultural displays and even step into a mock TV studio. The standout is the Kids Town Playground, a colourful maze of bridges, slides and climbing structures on the fourth floor.

Dotonbori Street Food Crawl

Everyone loves snacking, and there’s no better place to do it than Dotonbori. Many stalls offer mild, slightly sweet flavours, like fluffy cheesecakes, custard-filled pastries, chocolate-coated fruit, and crispy fries or karaage (Japanese fried chicken). Takoyaki can be a fun 'watch-it-being-made' moment even if kids aren’t into the octopus filling itself, and vendors are usually happy to adjust spice levels or suggest simpler options. The trick is to share and try as much as possible.
