Early morning laps, swimming lessons and a post-dip snack from the kiosk—Carss Park locals are a step closer to getting their neighbourhood pool back.

Construction is underway on the $63.5 million redevelopment of the former Kogarah War Memorial Pool site, which closed in 2019. The new complex is scheduled to welcome swimmers in late 2027, bringing an eight-lane outdoor pool and a dedicated learn-to-swim space to Sydney’s south.

There’s still a wait before you can reach for the goggles, but here’s what’s coming.

When Will Carss Park Pool Open?

The new Carss Park Pool is scheduled to open in late 2027, following construction and operational testing. Work began in August 2026, with piling and inground works commencing in September. An exact opening date is still to come.

What Will The New Carss Park Pool Include?

The centrepiece will be a heated, eight-lane, 50-metre outdoor pool, fitted with a movable swim wall so it can be divided into two 25-metre pools.

For those still finding their feet in the water, a separate heated, shaded 20-by-10-metre learn-to-swim pool will include ramp access and a swimming ledge.

Plans also include change rooms with lockers, family spaces, toilets, shaded spectator seating, pool lighting and a kiosk.

Why Did The Original Pool Close?

The Kogarah War Memorial Pool closed in June 2019 following an NSW Environment Protection Authority direction, amid pollution issues and the deteriorating condition of the facility.

The old complex was subsequently demolished and the contaminated site remediated, clearing the way for a replacement. Georges River Council agreed to rebuild the pool at the original site in November 2022.

For locals who learned to swim here or worked their weekly laps into the routine, the redevelopment marks a long-awaited return of community swimming to Carss Park.

Where Will The New Pool Be?

The new complex is being built at the former pool site on Carwar Avenue, Carss Park. The NSW Office of Sport is leading delivery on behalf of the NSW Government and Georges River Council, with funding from local, state and federal governments.

Entry prices, opening hours and swimming lesson bookings haven’t been announced yet. For now, late 2027 is the date to keep in mind—your next summer swimming routine could have a familiar address.
