Leichhardt Oval’s $40 Million Redevelopment Has Been Approved—Here’s What’s Changing

Leichhardt Oval is officially set for its biggest upgrade in decades.

The long-awaited $40 million redevelopment has now been approved, clearing the way for construction to begin after the 2026 NRL season. The project will deliver new grandstands, upgraded fan facilities and modern player amenities while preserving the character that has made the Inner West venue a favourite for generations of Wests Tigers supporters.

What's Included In The Leichhardt Oval Redevelopment?

The approved redevelopment focuses on modernising the stadium while retaining the close-to-the-action atmosphere the ground is famous for.

Key upgrades include:

  • A renovated western grandstand with new seating
  • A brand-new northern grandstand
  • Replacement seating throughout the lower bowl
  • Modern hospitality and media facilities
  • Four NRL-compliant female-friendly changerooms

The redevelopment has also been designed to better support elite men's and women's sport, alongside local clubs and community competitions that use the venue year-round.

When Will The New Leichhardt Oval Be Finished?

Construction is expected to begin once the 2026 NRL season concludes.

If work progresses as scheduled, the upgraded stadium will be ready ahead of the 2028 NRL season, with around 130 construction jobs expected to be created during the build.

What Does The Redevelopment Mean For Wests Tigers?

Known affectionately as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", Leichhardt Oval has been synonymous with rugby league since the 1930s and remains one of the spiritual homes of the Wests Tigers.

The redevelopment is expected to secure the venue's future as a host for NRL, NRLW and A-League matches, while also ensuring local sporting clubs and pathway programs have access to modern facilities.

For fans, the project aims to preserve the ground's unique atmosphere while delivering a more comfortable match-day experience with upgraded seating, amenities and hospitality spaces.
