Each winter, Vivid Sydney flips the city's harbourfront into a glowing playground of light, music, food and ideas. What started as a niche creative festival some years back, has grown into one of the world's largest celebrations of art and culture, drawing millions of visitors into the CBD after dark.

From May 23 until June 14, Sydney's most iconic landmarks, from the sails of Sydney Opera House to the laneways of The Rocks, are transformed by large-scale projections, immersive installations and experimental digital art. Alongside the famous Vivid Light Walk, the program spills into live music, chef-led dining events and big picture talks under the Vivid Ideas banner.

In my opinion, one of the biggest drawcards is that roughly 80 per cent of the program is completely free, meaning you can experience as much of Vivid simply by wandering the illuminated city.

Read on for our editor's guide to Vivid Sydney 2026.

What Is Vivid Sydney?

At its core, Vivid Sydney is a citywide arts festival that pulls together public art, msuic, food and big-idea conversations under one big winter banner. Its where international artists, local creatives, chefs and cultural thinkers taker over Sydney harbour precincts with a line-up of one-off events. To me, it's a  broad celebration of all things creative, after-dark and drawing different corners of Sydney's creative scene into the same orbit.

When Is Vivid Sydney?

Vivid Sydney 2026 runs from Friday 23 May until Saturday 14 June, lighting up the harbour and surrounding city precincts for 23 consecutive nights. Most installations and projections switch on around 6pm each evening and run until late, giving you plenty of explore the wider program post-work.

Most installations and projections switch on around 6pm each evening and run until late, giving you plenty of time to wander the Light Walk, catch performances or dip into the wider program across the city.

Where Is Vivid Sydney Held?

It's a great question. Vivid Sydney tends to unfold across a string of harbourfront precincts and inner-city neighbourhoods, with most of the action centred around the CBD. The core of the festival is the Light Walk, which threads through landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and the historic laneways of The Rocks.

From there, the program spreads west to Barangaroo and Darling Harbour, with installations, music and food events popping up along the waterfront.

In recent years, it's also expanded further into the city fringe into neighbourhoods like Haymarket and Surry Hills.

Where To Stay For Vivid 2026

Pullman Sydney Harbour

If being right among the action is your cup of tea, Pullman Sydney Harbour is the ideal Vivid getaway. You'll be absolutely locked in to the Vivid views—their onsite bar and restaurant offers panoramic shots of the harbour, so you won't even have to leave the building to catch a glimpse.

Coupled with their amenities (we're talking hot tub, sauna, gym, indoor pool, and 24-hour room service), this is basically a one stop shop for enjoying the lights without having to suffer through the crowds.

A step away from the harbour (but still very much in reach of the best Vivid has to offer), Paradox Sydney is a great option if you want to keep things central. Located on O'Connell Street, you'll be a few steps from Wynyard—easy to wander down to Circular Quay or check out the CBD lights around your hotel.

In terms of the stay itself, we rate the steam room, hot tub and pool access for a weekend wind-down—or hit up the spa after a long day of walking the city streets.

Or if you're looking to save your hard-earned cash, HotelTonight has plenty of last-minute deals on Sydney hotels. Plus, you'll get a nice little 10% credit straight to your Airbnb account.

The Best Vivid Sydney Light Events

The absolute star of the program will always be the light events. My favourites below but you can find the full program here.

  • Laser Lightview—a free nightly tour-de-force over Cockle Bay with a sweeping propulsive score by Sonar Music
  • Voxelevated—an archway of light through a glowing grid with LED cubes suspended in mid-air
  • Molecule of Light—standing 23-metres tall on three metal legs, this 6.5 tonne meteorite sits above Barangaroo Reserve, visible from Balmain and Chatswood

The Best Vivid Sydney Food Events

As a food and drink editor, my all time favourite part of any event or festival will always be the things you can eat. Understandbly, these will set you back on the dollar side of things but the calibre is always worth it. Pick one, commit and thank me later. Full program here.

  • Shared Table With Yotam Ottolenghi—an exclusive dinner and lunch with the god of fresh produce. Worth every penny. May 29-30, ILUMINA.
  • Saltbush And Starlight—easily the most beautiful three-course dinner you could ever dine in with First Nations chef Mark Olive in a hidden room inside the Opera House. May 22-June 13, Sydney Opera House.
  • Our Shared Future: Jean-Paul El Tom—Baba's Place x Corner 75 x SIT alumni meets OzHarvest for a four-course feed at Reffettorio OzHarvest made using almost entirely from rescued NSW produce. Bit of a no-brainer, in my opinion. June 11, Surry Hills.
  • Dream Feast—Sydney-born, New York-based culinary project Arlo Communal touches back down in their hometown for a handful of nights at The Mint, honour stories of immigration and Australia's changing taste. Think animated projections and a soundtracked mixed live by Munasib. June 2-June 5, The Mint.

Touch Wood Is Becoming A Waterfront Vinyl Bar During Vivid Sydney

Forget what you think you know about the Sydney Fish Market. Across the first two weekends of Vivid, waterfront restaurant Touch Wood is teaming up with DEADWAX for a late-night vinyl bar takeover complete with skyline views, cocktails and DJs spinning soul, funk and R&B.

Running from 5pm to 10pm across 22–23 May and 29–30 May, the multi-night series will pair limited-edition cocktails curated by the DEADWAX crew with bespoke bar snacks from Touch Wood Head Chef Courtney Blyde. The venue’s full seafood-focused menu will also be available throughout the night.

Entry is free, though bookings are recommended if you want to lock in a waterfront seat for the Vivid lights.

Janice Wong’s Dessert Art Is Taking Over W Sydney For Vivid

For two nights only during Vivid, W Sydney is teaming up with acclaimed Singaporean pastry chef Janice Wong for a pair of immersive dessert-led experiences.

Known for blurring the lines between pastry, art and performance, Wong is bringing her internationally renowned concept 2am:dessertbar to Sydney for the first time—transforming Level 30 of the hotel into a glow-lit dessert destination overlooking the harbour.

Running across 29 and 30 May, the first experience, Bioluminescent Dreams, will feature illuminated desserts, unexpected flavour pairings and theatrical presentation designed exclusively for Vivid Sydney.

Alongside it, Dessert Journey at Level 30 offers a more intimate experience: a three-course dessert tasting menu curated by Wong and paired with mini cocktails, all served against panoramic Vivid views from the rooftop.

With just 10 seats available per sitting, it’s shaping up to be one of the festival’s more exclusive food events—and a must for anyone whose Vivid plans revolve around dessert.

Vivid Fire Kitchen Is Back, And Bigger Than Ever

If you’re mapping out your Vivid eating itinerary, this is the one to lock in early. For 2026, the Vivid Fire Kitchen has moved into Barangaroo Reserve, stepping into a much bigger role as the festival’s headline food experience.

Running from 22 May to 13 June, the program brings together more than 60 chefs and culinary voices, all cooking over open flame across a series of themed nights. Expect everything from live-fire demonstrations to one-off dishes built specifically for the festival—plus a new Fire Pit zone where you can get up close with some of the country’s most respected chefs.

There’s a clear focus on storytelling this year, too. Events like No Taste Like Home spotlight NSW produce and regional talent, while Gwianga (named after the Dharug word for fire) centres First Nations ingredients, techniques and knowledge in collaboration with the National Indigenous Culinary Institute.

Elsewhere, the new Food For Thought stage is all about conversation, with talks and demos from names like Luke Mangan, Julie Goodwin and George Calombaris. And if you’re more of a sweet tooth, the June long weekend brings a full Dessert Takeover, with Adriano Zumbo, Emelia Jackson and Messina’s Donato Toce leading the charge.

The whole setup is designed to feel more like a rotating, sensory experience than a food court—and it's definitely not one to miss.

The Best Vivid Sydney Music Events

I always find the music line-up particularly hard to narrow down. The below are my recommendations for some of my top picks but you could really explore beyond this in the full program here.

  • Saint Levant—pulling from a range of cultures, the Palestinian, French and Algerian artist is bringing his latest EP Love Letters to Sydney which evokes traditional Arab and North African folk. June 6, Angel Place.
  • Derrick Gee's Radio Hour—I first discovered this legend on TikTok (yes, I dapple) and you might know him for his YouTube music show Solid Air which combines some super sharp musical insights. May 31, Sydney Opera House.
  • Soft Centre—electronic music with a late-night takeover of City Recital Hall, combined with high intensity club theatrics. Club sound, unmissable. June 5, City Recital Hall.
  • Astral People Studio Party—definitely one of Australia's most innovative artist management and international touring companies, Astral People have helmed the likes of Winston Surfshirt, Cosmo's Midnigght, Stormzy and Fred again. May 27, Sydney Opera House Studio.
  • Awesome Black Block Party—a one-night outdoor and free block party takeover with firepits, curated DJ sets, live bands and a dancefloor. May 31, Carriageworks.

The Best Vivid Sydney Mind Events

a person sitting on a seat looking up

Not going to lie, when we scanned the Mind events on offer at Vivid Sydney 2026, our whole office couldn't get enough of the line-up. Its dangerously good with immersive art shows, thoughtful talks and award-winning filmmakers right at your fingertips. Check out my picks below:

  • Midweek Minds: Legally Bonded—Mindy Seu, Shaun Daniel Allen (Shal) and Jason Phu at the State Library discussing how artists are able to own (or not) their work and voice, under the forces of AI-generated content. June 10, State Library.
  • Food Mahjong Club—mahjong, lychee Martinis and classic-inspired snacks takes over Mary's Underground. May 26, Mary's Underground.
  • Chloé Zhao: In Conversation—the Academy Award-winning filmmaker needs no introduction but peep her first appearance in Australia, follwoing the global acclaim of Hamnet in a one-night only event. May 28, State Theatre.

The Best Time To Visit Vivid Sydney

Because it stretches across three weekends, timing your visit can make a big difference to your experience. My recommendation is if you'd rather steer away from crowds, weeknights tend to be calmer, while Friday and Saturday evenings draw the biggest crowds.

How To Get To Vivid Sydney

Unsurprisingly, the easiest way to get to Vivid Sydney is by public transport. Trains, buses, ferries and light rail all run frequently to the CBD during the festival, with a bunch of services extended to handle the influx of people (and there's a lot). Major stations like Circular Quay, Wynyard, Martin Place and St James place you within walking distance of the main Light Walk installations around the harbour.

Prefer to be chauffered about? Us too. Luckily, Uber—an official partner of Vivid Sydney—has made sure to allocate specific pickup and drop off zones along the Vivid Light Walk. You'll find them on Macquarie Street (Circular Quay), Hickson Road (Barangaroo), and One Darling Drive (Darling Harbour)—easily viewable on the Uber app and their Accessibility Map.

More festival additions will be rolled out through April, for now you get all the information you need right here.
