Every spring, Sydney hands its stages, warehouses and heritage houses over to the weird, the wonderful and the wildly independent. That's Sydney Fringe, and this year, it's bigger than ever.
Running August through October, the 2026 program rolls out more than 350 events across 64 venues, featuring over 2,000 artists. It's New South Wales' largest independent arts festival, and the 2026 line-up leans hard into theatre, comedy, circus, cabaret, dance and immersive experiences that genuinely don't fit anywhere else.
Things kick off with Fringe Ignite!, a free street party taking over Darlinghurst's Stanley Street on Saturday 29 August. No ticket required, just live music, comedy, circus, roaming performers and food rolling through the afternoon into the night. It's an all-ages entry point into the festival, and proof that some of the best culture in this city still doesn't cost a thing.
For something a little more glamorous, Copa on The Rocks transforms Atherden Street into a cabaret lounge every night from 2 September to 11 October, with Andrew Bukenya hosting a singalong piano bar that's part performance, part party.
Circus lovers should have The Return of the Godz circled at Fool's Paradise, Entertainment Quarter. Head First Acrobats, one of Australia's leading contemporary circus companies, reimagine Greek mythology through acrobatics and theatrical spectacle, bringing gods and heroes to life in a way that's more spectacle than school textbook.
Food and comedy collide at FEAST, comedian Jennifer Wong's acclaimed dinner-and-storytelling series at Hurstville Entertainment Centre. This year's edition serves up a home-style Malaysian dinner from MasterChef favourite Sarah Tiong, alongside stories from some of Australia's funniest writers. There's also a new spin-off, FEAST: Chaat Show Edition, digging into Indian home cooking through conversation, comedy and chaat.
And don't miss Yalgali, Sydney Fringe's dedicated First Nations program, which continues to grow in 2026. Highlights include Toni Janke's poetic new musical work Inheritance, Elaine Crombie's Grief, Love and Lead Balloons, and the acclaimed dance production Sitting Ganaay, alongside the return of Open Mic Night at Eora TAFE on 9 September.
Beyond these picks, the program runs deep, from Doppelgängster's anarchic Cold War 2.0 to the Sydney debut of cult afterlife comedy Freidah Will See You Now, plus a month of stand-up at Sydney Fringe Comedy, contemporary dance, drag, burlesque and a dedicated kids' program running through the October school holidays.
