The verdict
The guys from Bar Tapavino on Bulletin Place have opened Balcon By Tapavino on Bligh Street, and we're quietly confident it will be our new favourite bar in the CBD. Their second venue brings one seriously impressive wine bar, and a restaurant complete with a unique food menu to our fair city.
With over 5,000 bottles of wine on show, yes that is three zeros people, and an outdoor area, this will be the place to go for after-work drinks. The wine is sourced from top quality wine producers in Spain and Executive Chef, Todd Garratt (previously from Buzo in Woollahra, Wine Library and Vincent) is using quality produce to create beautiful tapas dishes that are a contemporary take on the rustic and refined dishes from Northern Spain.
Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, Monday to Friday from 10am and Saturdays from 12pm, you’ll have plenty of time to get through several wines and tapas plates, and maybe even take a nap in between.

Bar Demo
Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
