The Verdict
Fusion both inside and outside of the kitchen, English Ben Sinfield and Vietnamese Tania Ho fell in love after meeting at work in London’s St John restaurant. After moving to Australia, Ben worked as sous chef at Chippendale’s Ester, and Paddington’s Fred’s and we’re pretty sure you know by now that this one’s going to be good. They’ve combined their cultural heritage and passion for food to open up a Banh Xeo Bar at The Cannery, Rosebery and it’s exactly what you’re thinking.
Personally, we can never go past banh mi, pho and rice paper rolls and at banh xeo bar, you definitely shouldn’t either. But due to popular demand at the weekly Paddington markets, this place is all about the Vietnamese pancake, or bánh xèo. These bad boys are made from a batter of rice flour, coconut milk and turmeric and then it’s cooked on an ridiculously hot pan and are then stuffed with pork belly and prawn, served with a side of fresh herbs, greens and a traditional nuoc mam dipping sauce.
Basically, the menu here is all about classic British dishes combined with Vietnamese flavours—they like to call it “Britnamese”.
