Between them, chefs Nathan Sasi and Morgan McGlone boast experience in some impressive venues: Adelaide's Leigh Street Wine Room, Belle's Hot Chicken, and NOMAD. After years of friendship, the duo (and Sali Sasi) has opened Bar Copains, a laid-back but detail-focused wine bar.
The wine list offers plenty of natural and off-beat wines complemented by a selection of more traditional drops, and the menu of small plates demonstrates technique while remaining approachable and re-visitable. Think a whiting sando, fluffy gnudi in brown butter with sage and pine nuts, or deep-fried eggplant topped with a liberal shaving of ricotta salata and tomato jam.
The humble neighbourhood vibe is elevated by the minimal interiors including a deep green slab marble bar, with small touches like ceramics, hand-made by McGlone, bringing the personal sense through to the design.
Must-try dish? The silky creme caramel dripping with sweetness-offsetting amaro.
