The Verdict

There’s no denying Sydney is living out a new golden age of desserts and cakes and adding to this fresh chapter is Black Star Pastry’s brand new store in the heart of the CBD.

We doubt that you’ve not ever heard of this epic cake haven but, just to refresh your memory, Black Star Pastry is the almighty creator of the world-famous strawberry watermelon cake (which is just casually ordered by the slice around a million times every year). The New York Times also dubbed it “the world’s most Instagrammed cake” and to be honest, we wholeheartedly back that.

Black Star Pastry’s new concept store, which is located on the ground floor at The Galeries (just off the Pitt Street entrance), features a dramatic sculpture across its entrance. Designed to look like the turning page of a book, it’s a nod to Black Star’s OG Sydney home in the nearby Kinokuniya Bookstore, and to the new chapter in Black Star’s Sydney story.

The new store features an online order hub with a dedicated cake collection point and a new pick up process that allows you to bypass the coffee and cake queues and nab up your order quickly.

The pre-work crowd will see this new outpost opening at 8am and churning out Little Marionette coffee, flaky ham and cheese croissants (plus chocolate and plain morsels) and silky custard flans for those that really want to live their best life at all hours of the day.

There’ll also be a new sweet treat on the menu—a peanut, chocolate and caramel tart layered up with salted peanut caramel, milk and dark chocolate ganache, almond shortbread and caramelised rice puffs.

As for the cake selection here, all your favourites will be present including said strawberry watermelon cake, the dragon cake piped with vanilla cream and pomegranate jelly ripples, the Japanese forest cake made with hojicha sponge and matcha moss, the pistachio lemon zen cake stacked with lemon curd, the vegan popcorn cake decorated with cocoa syrup and raspberries and the raspberry lychee cake—a rich stack of biscuit, raspberry marshmallow and rose-scented cream.
