The verdict

Tucked behind MediTrainean in Crows Nest, Blue Caboose is about to become one of your favourite summer bars in the North this year. The fit out is tropical and relaxed, making it the perfect kick off location before crossing the bridge, or an ideal spot for after work drinks. The cocktail list, created by Alex Clark (of Lobo Plantation, Eau de Vie and QT Sydney) keeps the holiday vibes going and our top picks are the sangria bianco and Moroccan pot punch.

The food is designed to share and if you’re in the mood for a nibble with your drink, then you should order from the tapas menu. But if you’re in the mood for something substantial, then the shared boards is your best option. We ordered The Capri, which is piled with dips, tabouli, arancini and a selection of charcuterie meats. We also wouldn’t blame you if you threw in a serve of the grilled prawns or calamari either, because they’re delicious.

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
