The verdict
The decision to eat at Chat Thai’s Haymarket location (bang in the centre of Sydney’s Thai Town, and surrounded by Thai grocers) is the easiest one you’ll make—the hardest is what to pick from their boundless and authentic menu of Thai dishes using incredibly fresh ingredients.
Starters at the two-level venue, which has been serving some of Sydney’s best Thai food for more than 15 years, range from Thai street food favourites like chicken satay skewers to fermented pork and rice sausages, and todt mun bpla fried fish cakes with refreshing pickled cucumber relish.
The khao na gai yaang chicken with tamarind relish and chilli flakes is packed with flavour from the grill, and the red curry with five-spice roast duck, pineapple, lychee and Thai basil will take you straight to Bangkok’s hustle and bustle, and make sure you save room for the colourful and textural Thai desserts like sweet dumplings of taro, Japanese pumpkin and pandan in sweet warm coconut broth, and the classic sticky rice with mango.
This offshoot of the original Chat Thai in Randwick (which has been trading for over 30 years!) serving some of Sydney’s best Thai food is prime for late-night dining in Haymarket, open and serving past 10pm every night of the week. Chat Thai can also be found in Manly.
