Sydney’s most talked-about sandwich shop is making its first big move. Cross Section is opening a second store in Bondi Junction after a breakout year that saw its Chicken Caesar wrap go viral — and sell out on the daily.
Founded by Josh Said and Brent Wasserman, Cross Section built a loyal following from its tiny Darlinghurst shopfront, where queues, repeat orders and city-wide pilgrimages quickly became the norm. The Bondi Junction opening marks the brand’s first expansion, landing in a space that feels both deeply personal and perfectly suited to how the team now operates.
“This is the first stop on our expansion journey," Josh tells Urban List. "It’s the first venue we’ve been able to design entirely from the ground up, using everything we’ve learned over the past year and a half, from operational pressures to layout and flow, to building a space that truly supports how we work.”
The pair say the move isn’t about changing direction — it’s about refining what already works.
“We’ve always known who we are as a brand and where we want to take it,” Josh continues. “We’ve always gravitated towards slightly quirky, unexpected spaces, the kind others might overlook, and this felt like the right opportunity at the right time to take that next step.”
Before Cross Section took over, the venue was a Sushi Express, a spot Josh and Brent grew up visiting.
“Previously, it was Sushi Express, a place that’s incredibly nostalgic for both of us. It was a staple throughout our teenage years and beyond,” says Josh. “Taking over the space feels like a full-circle moment.”
They’re even paying tribute in their own way: “We wanted to create a sandwich inspired by their spicy tuna avo roll… details to come.”
Designed for pace, volume and flow, the new store keeps Cross Section’s no-frills approach, with a fresh, clean look that stays true to the brand.
“It’s a small space, so we’ve been intentional about using every centimetre,” Josh explains. “We’ve created a sense of openness for customers while making sure the back-of-house can handle high volume and fast service. We’re also trialling a few new systems here, which we’re excited to see in action.”
The cult Chicken Caesar wrap remains the hero — “It’s what we’ve become known for and usually what brings people in for their first visit,” Josh tells us — but regulars will be pleased to hear the menu love doesn’t stop there. “Our Bear and White Chocolate Matcha is what keeps them coming back. That said, our personal favourite will always be the Mambo No. 5, which is our fresh turkey sandwich.”
Service, as always, is central to the experience. “More than anything, we want people to walk out saying how genuinely friendly the team is,” Josh says. “We’re proud that people talk about our food, but warm, welcoming service is what makes people feel at home, and that’s always been a priority for us.”
The Bondi Junction store will also lean further into Cross Section’s growing drinks culture. “Drinks on tap are having a real moment, and we’ve already leaned into that. Our cold foam drinks are consistently some of our most popular items, and we actually have a very special collaboration coming soon with another viral Sydney hotspot.”
For everyone who’s crossed suburbs or waited patiently to snag a table outside the OG, the east-side expansion should make life a little easier—without losing what made Cross Section a city-wide obsession in the first place.
More info is coming soon, so keep an eye on their socials for now to stay ahead of the game.
