The Verdict
Cucinetta is the Italian fine dining restaurant you want to make sure you hit at least once in your life.
This Woolwich institution is what all great anniversaries, birthdays, proposals—just all special occasions—are made of. Plus, it boasts one of the most incredible views of the Lane Cove River and Sydney Harbour Bridge and a must-try menu of Italian-style pastries. Like we said, she’s a real winner.
Owned by Vincenzo Mazzotto, Cucinetta is a place where everything's made to order, and we don’t suggest you order lightly. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can kick off your morning feast with zucchini fritters with smoked salmon, cucumber, crème fraiche and a poached egg, or ricotta hotcakes with orange mascarpone, poached pear, figs and coconut. There’s also a polished version of the classic breaky burger, with bacon, egg, chilli and tomato chutney, fontina cheese and rocket.
For lunch and dinner look you can start with housemade herb and garlic focaccia, buffalo ricotta and truffle honey, warm sourdough bread with cultured butter (we recommend adding anchovy fillets). There’s even an assorted Italian hand-sliced salumi board featuring pickles, charred bread, marinated vegetables, salami and cheese.
From there, move on to spaghetti made with Cuccina’s own garden-grown organic parsley, handpicked WA crab meat and tomato sugo, chilli and garlic soffritto. Vincenzo’s signature potato gnocchi with oxtail ragu is also a must, while meatier options include a twice-baked Sardinian-style Berkshire pork belly and a 15-hour slow-roasted Riverina lamb shoulder.
On top of its fine dining credentials, Cucinotta's pasticceria is home to some seriously good takeaway treats.
Kick-off your weekend mornings with one of the greatest banana cakes of all time (with cinnamon and cream cheese icing), or Nutella doughnuts dusted with cinnamon sugar, croissants loaded with Nutella, white chocolate, hazelnuts and mascarpone, giant choc chip cookies and fried Sicilian pastries filled with ricotta, orange and pistachio. You’ll want to make sure you order an entire box of these.
