The Verdict:
They’re called baked ‘goods’ for a reason, and Drury Lane is delivering them. Hailing originally from Tasmania (it's one of the state's fave bakeries, in fact), they've moved into the space above Brewtown Newtown and this sweet-spot is serving up all-things-pastry. The bakery is a partnership between Alistair Wise and Brewtown, and it’s no coincidence chef Alistair’s last name is Wise—as the chef behind Hobart's acclaimed Sweet Envy, Wise has brought his expertise to Sydney, and we’re more than willing to take one of everything for a spin.
The space is cosy, with exposed brick and an open-kitchen that makes it feel like you’ve just stepped into an old-school bakery, while their baked goods combine modern with old faithful family faves. Take the monti cookie—a spin off the Monte Carlo biscuit, but (much) larger, with coconut butter, cream and jam that oozes from this crumbly, orange biscuit. But if you’re not in the mood for something sweet (we’re judging you), then head for the savoury options instead, like pork and fennel pies or lamb and harissa sausage roll. Don’t think. Just dough it.
