The Verdict

Duo Duo Ice Cream is the highest calibre of the icy stuff here in Sydney, as far as we’re concerned. Having started as a food truck some three years ago, the concept was a win from the get-go. A mobile dessert truck that churned out the likes of sea salt caramel popcorn balls with butterscotch sauce, or pandan and coconut ice-cream scoops topped with a salted coconut glaze and toasted coconut.

Now, Duo Duo Ice Cream has finally opened the doors of an actual shop, situated just out front of its production factory on Chapel Street in Roselands. The new shopfront has meant an updated menu too, so while Duo Duo has always shone when it comes to deep-fried ice cream (more on that later), there’s now a colourful array of "duonuts"—Aussie and Asian-inspired doughnuts.

Flavours look like hazelnut and chocolate wattleseed, pandan coconut, creme brulee, Biscoff cheesecake, Thai milk tea, choc macadamia and sea salt, passionfruit, and cinnamon. You can buy these individually or go for gold with a box of six or 12.

In the freezer section, Duo Duo also has tubs and scoops of handmade ice cream with Vietnamese coffee, taro, mango coconut sticky rice, and blueberry cheese on offer.

Finally, the deep-fried goods do not go amiss here and you can expect all kinds of specials to fly out from the kitchen including strawberry and ricotta rippled with strawberry jam; brownie fried ice cream with vanilla bean, choc espresso ganache, baked fudge brownie; the staple apple pie with brown butter, cinnamon sugar, mascarpone cream, and butterscotch.
