The Verdict
With a name like “Flamin Galah”—you know there’s a whole lot of good times happening at this Jervis Bay brewery. And while Flamin Galah Brewing Co. might have opened its physical doors during one of the most difficult times in history, the brewery has been travelling on nothing short of an upward trajectory since it first started pummelling craft beer back in 2018.
Located close to the mouth of Currambene Creek on Scallop Street, Flamin Galah Brewing Co. was started by local legends Sam and Claire Hewson. The two have been documenting Flamin Galah’s progress on YouTube since 2019 and it’s well worth your time if you want to soak up some good bants and some handy know-how on what it’s like starting a brewery in Australia.
At the moment, their core range is made up of seven different craft beers—a Flamin Galah Pale Ale, a Pilot Neipa, Cosmos IPA, Iwatake IPA, an XPA, a Hooroo Hazy Neipa, and a Pink City Raspberry Ale. While the brewery has big plans to open in a brewpub later this year, for now you’ll find a pretty buzzing growler bar perfect for all the heavy sampling. Adventurous craft beer fiends will want to go straight for the Goodnight Irene Lattice Biscuit Stout, a creamy, sticky vanilla combo of deliciousness inspired by Claire’s grandmother’s age-old lattice biscuit recipe.
The Strewth Juice, On Smoko Hazy Pale, and Me Missus Pale Ale are also a nice win if you can get in before they sell out.
And if all that hasn’t convinced you enough to head down to Jervis Bay just to check these guys out, Flamin Galah Brewing Co. also cleaned up a heap of awards for its core range at last year’s IBA awards.

Bar Demo
Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
