The Verdict

You’ve no doubt knocked back a margarita (or three) and consumed more crispy prawn tacos than you’d like to admit at Fonda’s Bondi Beach establishment. Now, the Fonda crew are taking a step back from the sandy shores of the Eastern Suburbs and a step into the inner-city, opening their ninth venue in the leafy streets of Surry Hills.

Fonda, which literally translates from Spanish to English as "restaurant", was founded by two legends, Tim McDonald and Dave Youl, back in 2011. Since then, the two have steadily pinned down seven Melbourne outposts and added another two Sydney iterations to their Mexican street food repertoire, which is why it’s huge news that their latest has included another Sydney location.

Located on Crown Street, Fonda’s Surry Hills casa looks like a two-storey venue painted in all the restaurant’s signature pastel tones. Most notably, the pink facade will shine bright between the likes of The Dolphin and The Clock. As with most Fonda venues, this one will light up thanks to a whole heap of natural light and an open design. You’ll find a main restaurant area with booth seating, as well as an upstairs outdoor courtyard, which can be hired out as a private event space for up to 80 guests.

As always, the cocktail list anchors all the Mexican favourites, with a margarita line-up spanning house, traditional, and frozen. Elsewhere, cerveza, cider and wine from local and international producers make the cut too.

To soak up the good times, you’ll find all the usual Fonda suspects—tacos, chargrilled quesadillas, burritos rolled with flour tortillas and Fonda’s famous nachos with housemade guacamole and pico de gallo.
