Let’s face it, giant bowls of vegan pho and tofu stir-fries from Golden Lotus in Sydney’s Newtown are all that we crave when it’s cold out, or when we just need a warm hug from the inside. You better get in early, because Golden Lotus is often packed out, which is to be expected when vegetarian fried dumplings and vegan fish (whaaaaat!) is on the menu.

The menu is simple, fresh and affordable, but be warned—it’s also huge. Rest assured that the servings are substantial—take it from someone who thought it was a good idea to order six dishes between two, only to take half of it home in a doggy bag (#noregrets). Our top menu picks are the clay pot eggplant in a sticky, sizzling sauce, and the vegan beef rendang curry that’s as lush as it sounds and will confuse all of the meat-eating haters. Also be sure to hit up the dessert menu, where your toughest decision is choosing between the taro sticky rice or banana rolls with coconut cream. You’ve been healthy so far, so it’s your time to go all out (you’ve earned it).
