The verdict
King Street has welcomed its newest bar to the ranks of every-growing winners, Gurdys, and the warm and fuzzies are coming in very strong at this one. Drinks are what owners, Clare and Brett Davis, know best and they’ve channelled their decades of industry experience into a bomb cocktail menu, with each one served in vintage cut glasses.
There’s the killer XO espresso martini, which (as the name suggests) packs a serious punch, combining Adore Estate’s Killer Coffee (hint: it’s STRONG), while the hot buttered rum is like a big hug, made with their rich, house-made syrup. If cocktails are not on your agenda, then there’s a solid selection of beer on tap—like Mountain Goat and Balter for starters. In keeping with their sustainability ethos, wines are also served on tap, so they’re fresh AF and served straight from the keg, plus there’s a total plastic straw ban (which we love).
Food-wise, Gurdys is all about the share plate. Grab an antipasto plate for the table, which is piled high with all of the usual suspects, order a plate of ginger and crunchy shallot arancini balls, or keep it simple with the thick-cut potato wedges. If you’re going it alone, then try the Green Dog—a completely vegan hotdog, with the sausage provided by local vegan butcher Suzie Spoons—or the mini cheeseburger, which definitely isn’t vegan and has been crafted with serious love by Brazilian chef, Nilton Neto.
Perfect for a crowd or solo diners alike, pop into Gurdys the next time you stroll King Street overwhelmed with all the choice, and thank us later.

Bar Demo
Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
