The Verdict
Welcome to the future guys. The year is 2049. The food is friggin’ delicious and the drinks are hot-to-trot (but you’ll figure that out on your own).
Previously the Evening Star Hotel, this fresh small bar is inspired by neon-lit streets of Hong Kong and has been brought to life by China Doll and Merivale’s EST chef Seb Gee, Smoking Panda mixologist, Iain Guthrie and award-winning hospitality designer Paul Kelly.
Inside, it’s all about the retro-futuristic vibes and the epic tile mural backdrop.
Gweilo is churning out Pan Asian street food and share plates with a western twist (now’s probably a good time to mention that ‘Gweilo’ is Cantonese slang Westerners). That means wagyu beef and carrot ribbons drowning in Tooheys New rendang and spring rolls packed with pumpkin, truffle and mushrooms. You’ll also find an eggplant parmi bao on the menu smothered in Napoli sauce and yes, that’s your stomach growling in agreement.
The after-work drink game at Gweilo is strong as hell with theatrics like the flamin’ Hadouken complete with Roku gin, rosemary Aperol, grapefruit, yuzu ie. yes, this cocktail will be bursting with heat. The bar will house a comprehensive list of Australian and international wines, beers and liquor as well so your favourites are all covered.
