Nestled in the vibey hub of Simmonds Lane in Avalon, Leonardo’s Deli is where you want to head for top-quality cold cuts, artisanal cheese, and tasty vinos. Founded by two designers, Michelle Gilmore and Nic Chamberlain, the deli and wine bar has since become a much-loved staple in the Beaches.
The idea is that you can drop into Leondaro’s to pick up some mortadella and fresh mozzarella only to be swayed to sit down and have a cocktail (or few). Takeaway, dine-in and even catering—Leonardo’s does it all.
Of course, the decor is seriously impressive with the designer duo at the helm. The pint-sized space has a no-fuss, retro-Italian feel, fitted out with warm timber cabinetry, a tiled bar, and terrazzo flooring.
As for the goods, the deli stocks a drool-worthy selection of cheese and charcuterie. You can either sample the goods in-store or opt to make a takeaway platter and have a picnic by the beach. Or, you could just stock up your fridge with all the cheese. And, come Sundays, the venue dishes up a ‘Sinatra’ breakfast, featuring crispy prosciutto eggs, cold brew, and New York bloody marys.
“We source really interesting high-quality cheese and meats from local and international suppliers, we keep the produce pure; it speaks for itself,” says Chamberlain. “It’s an utter delight to meet so many new people and to serve this joyful community,” adds Gilmore.
Not only is Leonardo’s bringing a bit of old-fashioned deli love to the local community, but it also hosts regular gigs on weekends. So, call in for a tipple and some live tunes, stay for a feed, and then take home all the delicious deli goods you can carry.
