The Verdict
If you're looking for epic Asian food, Chinatown should be your natural port-of-call. Tucked away in the Prince Centre, this cheeky Chinese noodle restaurant is worth seeking out.
Here, it's chef Gary Yuen that is heading up the kitchen, armed with a casual 40 years experience in traditional Chinese cooking and yes, he's a dumpling king as well. At Mr. Chen, the noodles are made fresh on-site with viewing windows allowing you to soak up all the kitchen antics. Dumplings are also made to order so brace yourself for generously stuffed pork morsels either boiled, pan-fried or steam and fluffy BBQ pork buns to start your feast.
If you're keen to hit a feed outside the usual, then the special beef shank marinated with 15 spices and cucumber base is your go. However, the standout menu item is the iconic Lanzhou-style beef noodle soup. You can choose from five types of freshly made noodles ranging from extra thin to super thick, all hand-pulled on site.
And as if all this wasn't enough to convince you that this is your new regular joint, Mr. Chen's also slings out 30-cent dumplings for five whole hours from 5pm -10pm every day, and they offer free BYO.
