The Verdict

Penrith people get ready to dive into this eccentric new space inspired by Captain Watkins Tench, the 17th Century Explorer of the area. Oh yeah, we couldn’t even make that up if we tried.

We mean, how can you say no a wine and cocktail bar decked out as if it were the library of a First Fleet explorer? Exactly. Mr Watkins Bar is the legendary new hangout you’ll want to get to, stat. With international hotdogs, a wine list created by a Hubert sommelier (this is a big deal) and tinnies all up for grabs, the team here are really doing Sydney-siders a serious solid. And heads up, these guys churn out a mean coffee too.

From the outside, this one looks like your classic small cafe, but behind the green doors in the back to find this gem.

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
