The Verdict

Shanghai Dumpling Bar is the latest addition to Spice Alley, the outdoor Asian hawker-style food collective in Chippendale.

They make dumplings with classic Shanghai-style fillings, including pork and chives, pork and cabbage, beef and Asian greens, and chicken and mushroom. Their specialty is their colourful dumplings, with the wrappers gently stained with beetroot, pumpkin or spinach.

It’s an easy $9.80 for 10 dumplings served crispy-fried, boiled or swimming silkily in a broth. Noodles more your vibe? They got that base covered too with their black bean saucy zha jian mian bowl. You know what to do, team.

To celebrate their opening, Shanghai Dumpling bar is offering a Dumpling Happy Hour (the happiest of all hours), because nothing puts a dimple in your cheek quite like a dumpling on your plate. Make that four dumplings. For $1.

From Monday 25 to Wednesday 27 June, 6–7pm, they’re offering mixed plates of glorious dumplings for just $1. That’s 25 cents per dumpling, people. Like, it costs an extra 20 cents to get tomato sauce on your sausage roll these days (sheesh) so we're talking serious value here.
