The Verdict

South King Recreation Club is a hub of memories that pay homage to a time before lockout laws were even a thing in Sydney.

Boasting a remixed RSL vibe, with all the hallmarks of classic pubs you know and love, South King Recreation Club prides itself on premium schnitty’s, ice cold frothies and frozen chook raffles (not to mention its epic offering of beer flavoured lamingtons).

At this feel-good gem, you can expect a weekday happy hour from 5pm – 7pm curated by the legendary beverage manager Billy Johnson. And to keep the hungry at bay, canteen manager Deidre whips up a bunch of meal offerings and changing roster of club activities. Heavy hitters on the food front include the housemade ricotta gnocchi with roast pumpkin, burnt butter and sage and the vego nachos topped with baja sauce, salsa, Fresca and guac.

The team here also churns out a solid all-day Sunday roast served with roast potatoes, veggies, gravy and good-old Yorkshire pudding. Plus, to knock it all back, you’ll need to get around the peanut butter and jelly milkshake cocktail with Bulleit bourbon, raspberry and peanut butter ice-cream, or the classic whisky apple, that's loaded with Johnnie Walker black and fresh apple juice.

Vinyl stans can rest assured too because South King Recreation Club host a killer record fair each month and you’re guaranteed to find a bunch of vintage goodies.

Bars & Pubs

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
