The Verdict
If heading off for a weekend getaway and staying in a 160-year-old church isn’t on your list of things to do, it should be. And top of our list of historic, chapel-like stays not too far from Sydney is St Josephs.
Renovated from the ruins of a 19th century Catholic church, St Josephs is an extra charming guesthouse and event space located in the Macdonald Valley, just beyond Wisemans Ferry and only about a 90-minutes drive from the Sydney CBD.
Along with all its antique charm, St Jospehs is the perfect place to stay with a group of mates because you’ll find five bedrooms, four of them king-sized and with an ensuite bathroom. Each of the rooms also has aircon, great for summer escapes, and a TV too, if you’re feeling the need to chill solo. If you’ve got a big event on the horizon, like a hen or bucks night, wedding, or big birthday, St. Josephs can be rented out for these types of occasions too.
There’s also a sprawling entertainment area made for watching movies, listening to music, dancing (yes, there’s enough room for that), plus a large outdoor deck for a sundown session and a BBQ. Upstairs, you’ll find a secret retreat featuring stained glass windows and big view of all the happenings out front.
Inside, St Josephs sticks to its overall design theme with polished wooden floorboards, exposed sandstone walls, a stunning antique bar, church pews, and arched church windows still intact.
And while the guest house is novel, the surrounding valley and bushland is equally as charming, with resident lyrebirds, wallabies, wombats, possums and goannas all hanging around.
