Sugarcane
The verdict
The guys behind Sugarcane in Surry Hills have bought a taste of the East... to the east. Located south of the beach in Coogee, this South-East Asian inspired eatery is bringing much of its popular Surry Hills menu to the beachfront—with the addition of a wider range seafood options.
Here, owner and chef Milan Strbac and his team will be creating modern Asian food using fresh and local ingredients where possible. Think half shell scallop ceviche with lime and chilli, wagyu beef rendang, and Sumatran curry of Milly Hill lamb neck to name just a few.
There’s also a raw bar where Yoshi Fuchigami (ex-Catalina) will be sourcing the freshest seafood around to bring diners a South-East Asian take on a sashimi platter as well as freshly shucked oysters.
On the drinks side of things, Flynn McClellan (ex Uncle Mings) has created Asian inspired cocktails that are available all the way until midnight. We’re talking the likes of zesty takes on pina coladas with kaffir lime and lychees and Vietnamese coffee inspired cocktails—all moreish and 100% delicious. The small but highly curated wine list features a range of local and Australian wines, which are a little out of the ordinary.
A welcome addition to the Coogee dining scene, this is the kind of restaurant in Sydney where you can pop in for a few beachside drinks and snacks, go all in on an epic feast with friends, or keep it casual on date night. A real winner.
