The verdict

Adding to the significant surge of USA-themed bars in Sydney, Surly’s is an American BBQ joint that comes equipped with laidback vibes, neon beer signs, bar stools and live music. Recently opening as The Parlour Groups latest venture, Surly’s offers Surry Hills a true taste of Southern America and is accountable for inducing countless patrons into comfort food comas. If you’re after a true taste of ‘murica, we recommend the fried chicken served with mac n cheese, southern green beans, coleslaw or a bowl of one of their four, yes four, different types of fries.

We also can’t stop thinking about their American barbeque plate, which comes with a choice of pulled pork, spare ribs, beef ribs, beef brisket or chicken thigh and two sides of homemade cornbread. Be warned however, weekends are packed with crowds who like embracing their freedom of speech by vocally cheering for the football, so either embrace it or sit away from widescreen TVs!

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
