Teddy is a casual Australian bistro and bar in Kings Cross by Nick and Kirk Mathews-Bowden, of neighbouring Middle Eastern restaurant Ezra, with a fun ‘80s soundtrack, inviting weekly specials, and covers-all-bases menu.
Taking over the corner site that was Nick and Kirk’s modern Indian restaurant Raja, Teddy was devised to bring familiarity, affordability and accessibility to the Kings Cross hospitality scene.
“I believe there’s a real power to be found in nostalgic food, especially in uncertain times like these,” Nick said. “Right now, people are looking for food that’s comforting, not challenging. That’s been our guiding principle when developing the menu at Teddy.”
The menu covers upgraded versions of Aussie dinner table faves (king prawn cocktail, hot dinner rolls with garlic butter, and grilled lamb chops with green sauce) alongside fresh creations like potato skins filled with whipped cod roe and salmon roe; a pork and crayfish sausage roll with bois boudran; and baked cacio e pepperberry trottole.
For dessert, there’s a Teddy’s take on the Terry’s Chocolate Orange, or a pink grapefruit sorbet with chantilly and maraschino cherry (with optional boozy upgrade), and drinks cover fun cocktails and a mostly-Aussie wine list.
Happy hour runs 4pm–6pm daily, every day of the week, and offers $10 cocktails, $10 wines and a house jaffle filled with scamorza, saltbush and Malfroy honey. Weekly specials to add to the calendar include a Friday Business Women’s Lunch Special (a main and a margarita—available to all) for $35, and Wednesday night pasta and wine for $29.
