The Verdict
Sydney, feast your eyes on the flossy pink and nostalgic new cafe making a big name for itself in Petersham. Setting up shop in the space formerly known as Daisy’s Milk Bar, The Sunday Baker is a sweet mecca filled with retro baked goods and an all-day menu.
The menu here is every bit as classic as it is boujee, with feeds like the “Classic Aussie”—a flaky housemade sausage roll with smokey tomato relish, and “Monkey Business”, a fresh take on the ol’ banana bread deal but made vegan with your choice of Pepe Saya butter and chantilly mascarpone, or organic coconut yoghurt and vegan butter.
There’s also a number of deliciously nationalistic dishes including the “Queen Lizzie”, which is housemade scones with strawberry rose jam and vanilla chantilly cream; “The Scandi”, made up of cream cheese, soaked salmon, dill, pickle and lemon on sourdough, and of course, the “Inner West Mortage”; a tower of smashed avocado, housemade hummus, savoury granola and coriander on sourdough.
On the sweet treat side of things, you can expect more nostalgia in the form of Iced Vovo and Golden Gaytime cupcakes, rocky road specials, peanut butter jelly cupcakes (pictured above), custard tarts and mini pavlovas.
If you’re a chocolate fan, you’ll want to sit down for this next bit. The crew at The Sunday Baker also whip up a “Better Than Sex Brownie” made with dark, milk, white and caramel chocolate.
There's also a whole lot of Inner West love to be shared around here, with anything not made onsite sourced from a range of epic local artisans. All relishes and jams come from Drunken Sailing Canning (Dulwich Hill), pickled goods from I Made A Pickle (Petersham) as well as bread pastries from Chippendale’s Brickfields Bakery. The delicious wagon wheels are made by Sweet Petes Treats (Glebe), tea is from Newtown’s T Totaler Tea and butter is sourced from the one and only Pepe Saya.
And yes, The Sunday Baker is absolutely dog-friendly so round up your fellow pup parents and get set for a whole new level of brunch sweetness.
