The Verdict

Channelling a New Orleans jazz vibe, the Sydney bar Swinging Cat is certainly worth a visit. Located in the heart of the CBD, this basement bar has plenty on offer, including an extensive range of Sazerac cocktails. There are other loved options like the Hurricane and Ramos Gin Fizz that also hit the spot (be warned, the Hurricane is strong, so watch out!).

While this bar is on the small side (in truth, there is barely enough room to swing a cat) it’s the perfect nook for a cosy winter night or after work drinks. Sure, there may be a little line-up on a Thursday and Friday night, but we think that's because word is out about this fun small bar in the CBD.

On the food menu are toasties and one of the most generous charcuterie boards in the CBD. Snag a seat, order a snack and a drink, and settle in for a very cool and cosy evening.

TUL tip: The prawn and crab dumplings, and the New Orleans grilled cheese will definitely keep you satisfied.

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
