Historic Art Deco corner pub in Woollahra, Sydney

The verdict

For years the Woollahra Hotel has been one of the most iconic venues of the Eastern Suburbs. Now, thanks to a massive three-month revamp, the Art Deco pub continues to be a neighbourhood favourite—just with a fresh lick of paint.

Downstairs houses the timber-clad Front Bar where you can settle in for an evening with mates. While up a level you'll find the aptly named Upstairs at the Woollahra Hotel. Yes, the popular roof terrace is still there for afternoon schooners in the sun, as well as a new-look main bar and function spaces.

The menu also got a revamp, with the current food offering packed with Asian-influenced dishes by way of an ex-Rockpool chef — think spanner crab betel leaf and satay skewers for starters and mains like caramelised pork belly, house-made curries, and burgers.

Celebrating an occasion? Book a table at the pub’s adjoining fine-dining institution, Bistro Moncur, which serves up traditional French fare in a slick dining room.

There’s a place for everyone at the Woollahra, which makes it well worth checking out.

Bar Demo

Bar Demo is a late-night vinyl bar in Newtown, designed for lovers of a well-crafted drink without the fuss. Owners Claudia Morgan and Olly Churcher (Ex-Double Deuce Lounge) are bartenders by trade, so there’s faith to be had in their curated 60-bottle wine list and seasonally crafted cocktails. The venue itself has grown from their joint experiences working and sipping in some of Sydney’s best bars—Morgan says “we wanted somewhere open late where we could buy a bottle without sitting down for a meal, sink some martinis, listen to some interesting music or have a dance”. Bar Demo certainly checks all of the boxes: open 5pm—midnight, Wednesday—Saturday, with no full kitchen but a dedicated menu for snacks, and a soundtrack of full albums played on vinyl, with each night featuring a curated selection of tunes.
