The Verdict
Put down whatever it is you’re eating and save any space you’ve got in your stomach for Westfield Sydney’s newest recruit, Yayoi, AKA your fave Japanese Teishoku Restaurant. With over 343 locations in Japan, these legends are the real deal, so yes, you 100% need to find yourself a seat there, STAT.
WTF is Japanese teishoku restaurant, we hear you ask? Think a totes traditional style of Japanese dining with set meals made up of miso soup, a main dish of meat or fish plus a side of veggies AND "tsukemono" pickles. It’ super balanced and everything you could ever want when your tummy is grumbling and you feel like treating yo’self.
When it comes to ordering, the wagyu sukiyaki set, which is basically a beef hotpot (droooool), is our absolute fave. Served with an egg, the best way to eat this dish is to dip the beef in the egg then stuff yourself with udon noodles after. If you prefer seafood, opt for the unagi hitsumabushi (read: eel) and top your bowl off with alllllll of the condiments before you eat it.
If you’re not a fan of teishoku, they have a full a la carte menu with chicken kara-age, edamame, pork loin katsu-toji and asari miso shiru (clam miso soup), that taste even better than they look. Did we mention they have an entire menu dedicated to udon and jyu too? Yep, you’re defs going to come back here more than once.
All ordering is done via touchscreen so literally no one can bother you and they have all the best saké (plus 10 Japanese plum wines that don't cost a fortune!) to complement your meal. Perfect for a mid-week dinner treat or laid-back Saturday night date, Yayoi is never a bad idea.
