Think Townsville/Gurambilbarra is just another tropical stopover? Think again. Between its jaw-dropping natural surroundings and vibrant inner-city scene, this North Queensland gem has plenty to keep you busy, whether you're a local or just dropping in for a long weekend.

Here at Urban List, our preferred travel style is a healthy mix of bucket list-topping outdoor activities and poolside relaxation with a cocktail in hand (we're only human). Luckily for us, Townsville truly has it all—including a string of great spots to eat and drink. Don’t forget sunscreen for those endless sunny days and a mighty sense of adventure: these are the top 20 things to do in Townsville right now.

Hit Up The Strand

You can't go to Townsville without wandering down The Strand, a 2.5 kilometre palm tree-lined promenade that takes you right along the beachfront of this tropical city. The Strand is dotted with activities to suit locals and travellers alike. Expect sprawling parklands, bikeways, picnic areas, swimming and fishing spots, as well as heaps of restaurants, cafes, and bars to keep you refreshed in between activities.

Snorkel The Great Barrier Reef

Townsville’s unique position as the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef makes it an ideal launchpad to explore one of the world’s seven natural wonders. Whether you’re an experienced diver or more comfortable in a snorkel, there are plenty of options for you to get up close and personal with the swarms of marine friends within the central section of the reef. Just book a tour and away you go (or should we say swim?).

Spend A Night At The Cabaret

Forget Moulin Rouge, Lux Noir is the best cabaret in town. Townsville's premier comedy cabaret is dinner with a show (literally), including acrobatics, burlesque, live music and a comedy set to boot. With performances every Friday and Saturday night, this is one show you don't want to miss.

Dive Into The Museum Of Underwater Art

Did you know Townsville is home to the Southern Hemisphere’s first underwater museum, the Museum of Underwater Art? Well, now you do. Dive deeper (sorry, we had to) into history with a wreck dive on the SS Yongala—this built reef is home to mega marine fauna that is a true wonder to behold. While the real deal is always best, this shipwreck dive is an exception. Fun fact: The MOUA also holds the Guiness World Record for the largest underwater art structure.

Catch A Cowboys Game

If you're visiting Townsville when the North Queensland Cowboys are playing a home game, it's worth grabbing a ticket. Footy fan or not, gear up for a fun night out and get a real taste of Townsville culture at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Don't forget your Cowboys jersey.

Visit The Museum Of Tropical Queensland

Located in the heart of the city on Flinders Street, the Queensland Museum Tropics is a must-visit. Have a gander at North Queensland’s natural wonders, from the Great Barrier Reef to lush rainforests, alongside fascinating cultural and historical exhibitions, including maritime archaeology. With interactive displays, hands-on science zones, and family-friendly exhibits, it’s perfect for curious minds of all ages. Pop by The Galley Café afterwards to refuel.

Explore The Art Scene

Art means serious business in Townsville. Start at First Nations exhibition gallery Umbrella Studio on Flinders Street, explore Perc Tucker Regional Gallery for contemporary exhibitions, then hit the streets for a self-guided street art trail. The city centre is brimming with colourful alleys and laneways, mega murals and vibrant displays. Grab a free Street Art Walking Trail map from the Visitor Information Centre on Flinders Street—or just download the virtual walking trail app—to make a day of it. It's giving Melbourne's Hosier Lane a run for its money (but honestly? We reckon it's even better).

Ferry Over To Magnetic Island

A trip up North wouldn't be complete without seeing Magnetic Island, or as it’s locally known, Maggie. The island is just a 20-minute passenger ferry ride away from Townsville and is home to some of the best beaches in Queensland.

While it can be done in a day, it’s worth checking out the accommodation options, because between the snorkelling, hikes, restaurants, and bars (and not to mention the native colony of adorable rock wallabies and the largest population of wild koalas) you’re going to want to stay a night or two.

See The Crocs At Billabong Sanctuary

Take the kids (or your inner child) for a wild day out at Billabong Sanctuary, Townsville’s Australian native animal wildlife park. Meet koalas, wombats, kangaroos, and catch the thrilling crocodile feeding. Throughout the day, interpretive talks give fun insights into each animal and their role in nature. Plus, enjoy free animal encounters—including holding a baby croc or snapping a selfie with a koala—for an unforgettable, hands-on wildlife experience.

Grow Your Knowledge With A First Nations Tour

One of the best ways to truly experience this country is through the thousands of years of knowledge that comes from the region's First Nations people. Joining a Gudjuda Aboriginal Tour or Mungalla Aboriginal Tour is a great way to understand how they thrived in the area now known as Townsville and offers an authentic insight into the history of the region.

Marvel at the giant carpet snake monument, Gubulla Munda, experience smoke ceremonies, try native food and learn from some of the oldest art forms on Earth, all within Townsville and its surrounds.

Market Hop Like A Local

Townsville’s weekend markets are a treasure trove of artisanal goods and tropical produce. Kick things off at the Strand Night Markets (usually held on the first Friday of each month)  for live music, artisanal finds, fashion, and homewares. On Sundays, start your day at the Cotters Markets on Flinders Street—North Queensland's largest market, no less—for local crafts and fresh produce. And if you're feeling up to a mini adventure, hop the ferry to Magnetic Island Markets (open every Sunday) for handmade jewellery, local art, and tasty treats.

Enjoy The Views At Castle Hill

If you’re looking for the best views of Townsville, you’ll want to head up to the top of Castle Hill. The hill (which is just metres shy of a mountain) sits at the centre of town and is the perfect landmark to help orient yourself.

Castle Hill has plenty of walking trails that meander up to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of Townsville and its surrounds. There are plenty of benches along the way to break up the trek, or you can opt to drive to the top if hiking isn’t your jam.

Sail Into The Sunset

It’s not a tropical holiday without a sunset sail, right? We think not. Fortunately, Townsville provides plenty of options to make your North Queensland dreams come true. Book a leisurely sunset cruise with Pilgrim Sailing or Big Mama Sailing around Magnetic Island, and enjoy the sea breeze with a sparkling wine in hand.

Take A Self-Guided Tour Of Jezzine Barracks

Jezzine Barracks is where Townsville’s military and First Nations histories collide in a 15-hectare coastal precinct. Wander past 34 striking public artworks, explore the restored Kissing Point Fort, and stroll the coastal boardwalks with dazzling views over the Coral Sea. Whether you're into history, art, or just seeking a scenic walk, this spot offers a unique blend of culture and nature.

Chase Waterfalls At Crystal Creek

Just a short drive north of Townsville, you’ll find the impressive Crystal Creek, which provides idyllic swimming holes and waterfalls to explore and cool off in. Arguably the best part of Crystal Creek, however, is the smooth rock formations that have turned into natural waterslides that are guaranteed to bring out the little kid in you.

The falls are located within the lush Paluma Range National Park, and there are plenty of hikes for you to explore the area even further. Or take to the trails by eBike with a guided NQ Cycle Journeys tour. The main entrance currently requires a permit, so make sure you request one before you go.

Explore The North's Own Wild West

If big is on your bucket list, then be sure to buckle up for a visit to Texas Longhorn Tours. Open seasonally, this working outback property is home to the largest herd of Texas Longhorn cattle outside of Texas. These beautiful bovines are impressive in every sense, with horn length holding records across the nation. Take your time to immerse in the history of this township of Charters Towers which was once known as “The World” from the historic gold mining days.

Escape To The Riverway Lagoons

Escape the heat at the Riverway Lagoons, a free, family-friendly oasis along the Ross River. With three massive lagoons, shaded picnic spots, and free gas barbies, it’s perfect for swimming, splashing, or just chilling under the tropical sun. Wander the scenic riverwalk, explore local art at Pinnacles Gallery and the Riverway Arts Centre, or time your visit for community events like outdoor movies and yoga. It’s the locals' go-to sunny spot for fun and relaxation for a reason.

Play Retro Games At Empire Alternacade

For a night out that’s anything but ordinary, check out Empire Alternacade. This underground arcade in the heart of Townsville serves up very cool vibes with retro games, killer tunes, and even better cocktails. Whether you’re lining up for a game of pinball, battling it out on arcade classics, or just soaking up the neon-soaked atmosphere, Empire is the ultimate spot for a fun night on Flinders Street.

Soak Up The Sun At The Beach

When we think of a tropical getaway, white-sand beaches come to mind. And Townsville certainly delivers. Shelly Beach is idyllic for a seaside stroll, while The Strand is perfect for a family-friendly swim with picnic spots and a scenic esplanade. For a quieter escape, head to Pallarenda Beach for soft sand and calm waters—just make sure you swim inside the nets during stinger season from October to May (don't say we didn't warn you).

Party At Otherwise Bar

Otherwise Bar is Townsville's alternative music hub, where you can let loose in the bunker-style venue until after hours. From grunge nights and indie showcases to DJs and wild themed gigs—yes, even a Shrek-themed party with green glowsticks and cocktails—this place pulses with energy. With a recent stage and sound upgrade, it’s perfect for catching local legends and touring acts in an electric, intimate setting.
