Townsville has finally scored a contemporary boutique hotel, and it’s the perfect excuse for a city staycation.

Victoria Street Boutique Hotel officially opened its doors in May 2026, following a multi-year, multi-million dollar transformation of the former property, a modest motel from the 1970s. Now, the 21-room coastal escape is one of the most coveted stays in the city—complete with unparalleled ocean views across to Magnetic Island.

Positioned on a charming heritage street in the Townsville CBD, the design-led hotel is within walking distance to the beachfront and vibrant lifestyle precincts such as Flinders Street Wharves and The Strand.

Inside, studio-style rooms with king and queen beds are thoughtfully designed to reflect the city's tropical surrounds. Awash in soothing hues of sage green and coral pink, timber accents and palm tree motifs, each room features premium bedding and ultra-large rain showers in slick stone bathrooms. But the real drawcard is an ocean-view pool surrounded by green-and-white striped umbrellas and loungers for guests to unwind in the reliable North Queensland sunshine.

Unlike anything else in Townsville, this exclusive stay is a desirable addition to an accommodation scene largely dominated by larger hotels, resorts and apartment-style Airbnbs

"Boutique accommodation, at its core, is about giving guests insight into the local fabric of a place," said owner and director Olivia Mayne. “Ultimately, I want guests out of the room and visiting Townsville’s unbelievable plethora of cafes, restaurants, bars and gardens. Our main street has a waterfall, and our backdoor has an incredible hiking track that people would normally drive hundreds of kilometres to enjoy.”

Showcasing Townsville and its community is the central ethos at the heart of the hotel. A unqiue local artist is featured in each room, alongside complimentary locally-made chocolate and local brewery beers selected by the tradies onsite during the build. Supplied picnic bags and rugs made from recycled plastic encourage guests to explore the nearby Queens Gardens, The Strand or the Cotters Markets on a Sunday.

"It's a small way to invite guests to be interested and curious about Townsville and this region. Where else in Australia can you walk along a beautiful path, see a wild koala, don a snorkel and swim among cowtail stingrays and the reef?" Mayne said. "This region is extraordinary, but it is still a location that needs that helpful nudge and itinerary to truly make the most of it."

Beyond the accommodation, the one-acre precinct also encompasses Kardinia, a 19th century State Heritage villa. Featuring a concert hall, library and private event space, Kardinia can now be booked for private functions and corporate events, such as balls, workshops and weddings.

For travellers or locals looking to experience Townsville from the centre of the city, this hotel is shaping up to be one of the region's most anticipated openings of the year.
