Queensland is spoilt for choice when it comes to tropical islands. Only 8km from Townsville,  Magnetic Island is arguably one of the best.

Sitting within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, this palm-fringed escape might be small (just 52km²), but it seriously overdelivers on island life activities. Think hidden beaches, resident wildlife, snorkel trails and waterfront dining that’s perfect for sundowners.

Whether you’re planning a day trip or stretching it into a long weekend, here’s how to do Maggie right.

Shop At The Markets

If you’re visiting on a Sunday, start your day at the local markets along the Horseshoe Bay Foreshore. Expect handmade jewellery, breezy resort wear, fresh produce and the kind of souvenirs you’ll actually want to take home, such as beautiful local art. It’s a great place to kick off your island adventure.

Discover The Bays

Beach lovers, rejoice: there are over 23 beaches and bays spread across Magnetic Island. Horseshoe Bay is the go-to for water sports and swimming, complete with seasonal stinger nets and SUPs, kayaks and paddle boats for hire. Nelly Bay, Picnic Bay and Alma Bay in Arcadia are all family-friendly and easy to access.

If you venture to more secluded spots, such as the picturesque Balding Bay or Radical Bay, you might just land a beach all to yourself.

Spot Wild Koalas On A Hike

Yes, wild koalas—plural. Magnetic Island is home to around 800 of them, and your best shot at spotting one is along Forts Walk. This 4km trail winds through eucalyptus forest, past World War II military camps and out to panoramic ocean views. Just keep your eyes up—they’re often napping in the trees. If you’re keen to push further, the 9km trek from Nelly Bay to Arcadia is another scenic standout dotted with the furry critters.

Follow A Snorkel Trail

You don’t need a boat to find the good stuff here. BYO snorkel gear and walk straight into the water at Nelly Bay or Geoffrey Bay, where snorkel trails lead you through vibrant coral gardens teeming with sealife. Alma Bay is another favourite, with calm, clear water that’s perfect for beginners. Inner yellow buoys show where the snorkel trails start and finish, so you can snorkel at your own pace.

Feed Rock Wallabies

For a friendly wildlife encounter, head to Geoffrey Bay at sunrise or sunset. This is when Magnetic Island's native Allied Rock Wallabies come out to feed—and yes, you can get surprisingly close. Pick up wallaby pellets from the local newsagency in Arcadia and settle in for one of the island’s cutest activities.

Enjoy Sunset Dinner And Drinks

When golden hour hits, there’s really only one move: a drink in hand, facing the glittering water. Horseshoe Bay is perfect for a casual sunset session, while Nelly Bay steps things up with waterfront dining spots where you can linger long after the sun dips. Try Saltwater or Boardwalk Restaurant for seasonal plates and cocktails with a view.

Hire A Topless Car

If you do one thing on your Magnetic Island getaway, make it this. The island’s iconic topless and doorless ‘Barbie cars’ are a fun novelty, with the added benefit of allowing you to access secluded bays. Pick one up from Isle Hire in Nelly Bay and cruise between beaches with the wind in your hair. If you’re hopeless at directions, don’t fret: the road network is tiny, so getting lost is basically impossible.

Take A Scenic Boat Cruise

For a different perspective, jump on a boat and explore Magnetic Island's coastline from the water. You’ll find hidden bays, snorkelling spots and that unreal reef-blue colour stretching in every direction. Pilgrim Sailing offers laidback, small-group tours on a classic yacht. On a lunchtime or sunset cruise, you can toast your island escape with premium wine, beer and seasonal cheese platters.
