THE BEST BEACH HOTELS IN LOS ANGELES AT A GLANCE
- Best Hotel For Surfers, Viceroy Santa Monica

1819 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401
Viceroy Santa Monica
The Viceroy doesn’t take its surf-side location for granted. In addition to the beach yoga sessions it holds twice a day, the hotel has a live WebCam propped up on its rooftop—so you can get a taste of the views from anywhere in the world.
Inside, the hotel’s walls are lined with the work of local artists. Of particular interest is the series of “lost” 1980s photographs of Andy Warhol, which were recently discovered and restored to create new mixed media artworks.
23033 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu 90265
The Surfrider Malibu
Originally a motel, this small 20-room property—of 1950s vintage—has been transformed into a homely hotel. The multi-award winning space is designed to look like the living room of a California beach house—but between the hammocks, organic textiles and scented candles, you could just as easily mistake it for a luxe gift shop in Bondi.
There’s no sense of pretension at The Surfrider—so don’t worry about getting a bit of sand on the floors. Plush towels, outdoor chairs, beach umbrellas and surfboards are all part of the package.
2515 Pacific Coast Highway, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
Hotel Hermosa
Looking for a spot where you can snooze and play? Hotel Hermosa occupies a prime spot near Manhattan Beach, where you've got restaurants and cafes galore to explore. Inside the rooms give 90s energy, with palm trees, waves, and sandy-beige tones (we suggest snapping up the King Bubble Room, which includes a spa tub by the bed.)
When you've got LA as your playground though, you're not going to want to spend much time inside. If you're not out and about maxxing out the credit card, we expect to find you in the pool (or playing pool on the hotel's oversized backyard patio, fondly dubbed The Yard).
700 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90401
Santa Monica Proper Hotel
Although it’s set a few streets back from the beach, guests of the Santa Monica Proper Hotel get access to their on-site Tesla Model 3S—which is perfect for cruising along the coastline. There’s a strong theme of physical activity and wellness here, so it’s a great choice for anyone on a fitness journey.
The gym is equipped with Peloton bikes; there’s complimentary yoga and Bootcamp classes or you can book a personal training session with a celebrity instructor. After your workout. Take a leap in the 5° cold plunge pool, which is said to help reduce muscle soreness and speed up recovery after exercise.
327 Latigo Canyon Rd, Malibu, CA 90265
Calamigos Guest Ranch And Beach Club
Set across 200 acres in Malibu Wine Country, Calamigos Guest Ranch and Beach Club blends rustic California charm with effortless coastal luxury. Guests have access to both the private ranch and an exclusive beachfront club — the best of the mountains and the sea in one unforgettable stay.
Choose from private cottages, bungalows or estate rooms, each featuring airy interiors, plush robes, and sun-soaked balconies or patios. Spend the day between three sparkling pools and a heated spa pool, or linger over cocktails at the Ranch Club and Pool Bar.
With pickleball courts, table tennis and endless space to unwind, Calamigos is equally suited to leisure getaways or business retreats.

Malibu Beach Inn
The only real difference between Beverly Hills and Malibu is that on the coast, the multimillionaires are more likely to wear flip flops (thongs to us Aussies) instead of Louboutin. But don’t let Malibu Beach Inn’s casual vibe deceive you; the meticulous Scandinavian-Japanese room designs still speak to luxury, and the spacious bathrooms include heated toilet seats.
There’s direct access to Carbon Beach from the hotel’s doorstep, and a range of unique packages available—including couples retreats, surfing packages and one simply titled “Bubbles, Blowout and Botox” to remind you that you are definitely in LA.
2819 Ocean Front Walk, Venice Beach, California, 90291
Venice On The Beach Hotel
Venice Beach just hits different. It’s where bodybuilders mingle with street performers; where cyclists and skateboarders soar along the promenade; and where nobody is surprised to see a grown man walk his toy poodle, both of them dressed in heels and tutus.
You can’t get any closer to the action than at Venice on the Beach; the hotel is pressed right up against the Boardwalk, close enough to witness its glorious weirdness but far enough away to relax and not have to keep an eye on your valuables. Simply wake up, enjoy the free breakfast, and step outside onto the sands.
1415 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401
The Georgian
Established in 1933, The Georgian is universally considered as one of the best beach hotels in Los Angeles thanks to the fact it's got lashings of Old Hollywood charn and hyper-attentive service.
It’s reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film, with a strong art deco design that carries all the way throughout the hotel—from the pastel-uniformed bellhop to the orange velvet bed frames. It’s the little touches that set this hotel apart, like the mood-lit library, champagne on arrival, and availability of a private yacht for hire to cruise the Santa Monica coast.
1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica, California 90405
Hotel Casa del Mar
It’s been many places to many people: a private beach club, a Navy housing base, a drug rehab centre and a wellness centre for Pritikin enthusiasts. Now it exists as the Casa del Mar—a bougie hotel showcasing Italian Renaissance Revival-style in full flight.
While premium, the rooms have a pleasantly lived-in, residential feel; heavily decorated and stocked with amenities like Nespresso machines, whirlpool bathtubs and stellar book collections. It’s the internal courtyard however—with a pool and sun lounges that faces out onto the Pacific Ocean below—that steals the show.
849 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403
Oceana Santa Monica
Considerable effort has been made to create unique, memorable spaces at the Oceana hotel. Each guest room comes with its own handpicked selection of artwork, books and textiles—ensuring that no two rooms are identical.
But with Palisades Park and the beach directly across the street, it convenience that’s the real drawcard here—and five-star amenities such as direct airport transfers to and from the hotel, a ‘beach butler’, and a concierge who can get you VIP access to the Getty Villa.
28920 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265
Hotel June Malibu
Sitting pretty just off the Pacific Coast Highway, a three-minute drive from Zuma Beach, Hotel June Malibu feels less hotel and more real California living. It’s thanks to the fact that the accommodation here is in mid-century bungalows which look out over the hills and offer king-sized Casper beds and private patios with garden views. Years back, this place was a motel which lured writers and artists to stay, including Bob Dylan, who wrote Blood on the Tracks here.
A stay at this Los Angeles hotel gives you everything you need, and nothing you don’t. It’s a good job we need a heated swimming pool, hammocks, bike and surfboard hire because you get all that thrown in. The only thing it doesn’t have is a restaurant. But, really, who needs that when you can order UberEats or head right on out to sample everything Malibu has to offer.
260 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach, CA 90277
The Portofino Hotel & Marina
Named for the Italian seacoast town of Portofino, this Mediterranean-inspired bach hotel isn’t as ostentatious as the five-star hotel experiences you might encounter in LA—but that’s even more reason to visit.
Located on the Redondo Beach Peninsula, The Portofino Hotel and Marina is a great option for those with an active crew in tow—as you can head to the hotel's Dockside Adventure Center to grab kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, boat charters and bike rentals. Once the fun is done, we recommend taking a load off at BALEENkitchen, the marina-side restaurant and lounge where you can tuck into seafood and vino.
