It's not just big cities that have the monopoly on a good cup of joe. Hobart has a thriving coffee community, and more than enough places for you to hit for a top quality pick-me-up.
Duncan Allen, co-owner of Abercrombie Coffee, said Hobart's coffee scene is on a sharp trajectory upwards to meet the demands of the local coffee connoisseur.
“Hobart’s coffee industry has come into its own in recent years,” Allen said. “We’re seeing a rise in specialty coffee shops, roasters and talented baristas all working together.”
Whether you're seeking a classic cappuccino, a quick batch brew, a fun new alt milk riff or a single origin with a unique flavour, brewed thoughtfully and with a passionate barista preamble, Hobart has it all.
Ian Merrigan, owner of Moonah’s Shake specialty coffee shop, says customers aren't only looking for a caffeine hit nowadays, but are intrigued by variety and source and how that impacts flavour.
“We consider it part of our mission to always carry a diverse range of varietals, roast with intention so the varietal traits are clear in the cup,” Merrigan said. “It’s a small difference, but it changes the daily dialogue… But above all, we do this with approachability. We’re here to serve and meet our community's needs and desires. Coffee is modest in Hobart, where the humble go the distance.”
From the low-key brew with brunch to the artisanal roast worth pondering like a fine wine, here's where the find the best coffee in Hobart.
Six Russell Bakes

The newest venue from Kobi Ruzicka (Lucinda Wine Bar), Six Russell is a combined bakery and bistro. Bakery takes the day shift, with a sleek, contemporary fitout that favours clean white and sharp black. It’s mainly built for quick service takeaway, brewing Single O coffee plus rotating guest roasters. The bakery churns out fresh bread, loaded focaccia and savoury and sweet pastries, like exquisite pear and pistachio tarts. Grab a sandwich or start the day with their famous muffin of pork and fennel sausage, eggy omelette, American cheese and creamy dill sauce.
Baked
10 Sunderland Street, Moonah

Gluten free? Good news, it's time to get Baked where you'll find some of the best coffee in Hobart. Baked is a humble bakery-cafe in Moonah with a homey, casual vibe brewing up local Lottie Lane coffees in the slick little espresso machine. If you need another bev to get you buzzing, they also sling smoothies, hot chocolate and Prana Chai. But the 100% gluten-free menu takes the cake, with house-made goods like jammy doughnuts, eclairs with fresh cream and thick cinnamon scrolls. Settle in for brunch and grab a Rooben sandwich with house-cured wallaby, a stack of hotcakes with seasonal fruits or a simple eggs benny on brioche.
Westside Laundry
87 Goulburn Street, Hobart

A converted old laundromat houses a suburban deli just 10 minutes from the CBD. The coffee? Damn fine. Westside Laundry's team of experienced baristas serve up fresh cups of coffee from local roaster Zimmah. By day, a simple (yet perfect) selection of made-to-order New York deli style filled bagels, toasties and sandwiches like a Westside Club or egg sando and daily specials. In the evening, it becomes a hip little wine bar diner the locals love. They’re also proudly dietary friendly. And booze friendly: they’ll serve you a Bloody Mary or vino day or night.
Abercrombie Coffee
431 Elizabeth Street, North Hobart

Community-minded cafe Abercrombie Coffee is helmed by two seasoned pros: Duncan Allen and Peter Ladyman, with 30+ years of coffee between them. Local roaster Villino Coffee is on daily, with a changing selection of sustainable roasters—plus compostable takeaway cups. This is a sunny oasis of inclusivity and a warm welcome: it's queer-friendly, wheelchair-accessible, with a dairy-free puppuccino—ideal for when guide dog pups-in-training stop by. Allen is a Guide Dogs Tasmania volunteer and donates 100% of tips. The focus is on brewing top-notch coffee (which they'll even pair with OJ if you're game), but they have a selection of baked goods with regular pop-ups with Tassie icons, with past collabs including Tom McHugos, Basque Moons and Lark Distillery.
Pigeon Whole Bakers
32 Argyle Street, Hobart

Your CBD spot for a quick batch brew pick-me-up—while you pick up a few croissants, of course. Pigeon Whole Bakers are pouring some of the best coffee in Hobart, served alongside cracking baked goods. We’re talking sourdough and rye loaves, shiny bagels, crisp croissants and danishes cradling sweet seasonal fruit. That fresh bread also gets slapped into some fresh sandwiches, with daily changing fillings. Their coffee rotates between their house collab with local roaster Villino and a selection of Market Lane and Proud Mary beans, among others. If you can find a spot, perch at the little bar at the window.
Shake Coffee Roasters
85 Main Road, Moonah
Shake is both a cafe and a roastery (and you’ll see their beans at a few other venues in town). Owner Ian Merrigan is inspired by a wine bar approach to beans.
“Besides the classics—your takeaway flatties and batchies, we also run verbal like some of our favourite night time venues,” Merrigan said. “Just tell us what you feel like drinking. You want a milk coffee that tastes like blueberry? Done. A peachy pourover? Done. An espresso that tastes like lychee? Done. We have a treasure chest of wonderful coffees that has something for everyone. Clean, funky, crazy varietals or just something humble and sweet.”
Outside of coffee, they keep it simple. Chai from Flying High Chai, fresh pastries, a little spot in the sun to sit and enjoy your specialty brew.
Erda
167A Harrington Street, Hobart

Erda occupies a cute little corner in an old brick building on the city’s west, owned by husband and wife team Min and Mick. Aside from the full range of black, iced, milk, alt milk, batch brew and cold brew, they also serve chai, hojicha and matcha. But you can’t overlook the fun specialty drinks, like Dark Cloud, an iced ceremonial cacao with coconut blossom sugar, or the striking Blue Sky with banana matcha, blue majik oat milk, coconut yogurt and leatherwood honey. The food is deliciously different with omurice, apple crumble and rice porridge, honey butter toast and galette complete.
Somewhere Coffee Bar
5/118 Elizabeth Street, Hobart
One for the coffee purists. Brian Lam at Somewhere Coffee Bar is something of a genius of the brewing art, deeply dialled into the craft of coffee. You’ll always find a super cool variety here, perfect for pour-over or a siphon specialty coffee. As it’s mostly a one-man show with careful process, it’s one for thoughtful drinkers who want to chat about coffee rather than someone who needs a quick caffeine blast on the go. But you will find amazing coffee from international roasters worth pondering over. Chill out and linger for something special—including that homemade basque cheesecake.
The Stagg Midtown
138 Elizabeth Street, Hobart

Reliable and longstanding local favourite, The Stagg is smack bang in the CBD and your perfect pit stop or first port of call as you start the day. It’s a charming hole-in-the-wall with an old-school wooden shop front with multiple decorative stags and welcoming footpath tables. Stop in for a hot toastie, fresh pastry or slab of their famous banana bread and a chat. They’re humble, but far from average: as part of Lottie Lane Coffee Roasters, they pride themselves on having every coffee bean tailored appropriately to your milky, long black or filter needs.
Sunbear
145 Collins Street, Hobart

Visiting Sunbear is like stepping into the dining room of a friend’s home: warm, off-white walls and polished wooden floors, retro crockery, mismatched chairs, flowers and houseplants. Run by caring folks that include Agrarian Kitchen alum, you’d be unsurprised by the quality and homemade touches, be it pickles, ricotta or scones baked to a family recipe. The bread is from Pigeon Whole Bakers, used for their loaded sandwiches and toasties, like cauliflower-cheese toastie and the seasonal veg toast with “some roasted, some raw”, a boiled egg and house-made sauces. They change up their coffee, but always serve classics from espresso and flat white to batch brew or iced latte, plus some house specialties like butterscotch latte.
