Catherine O’Hara Leaves Behind An Iconic Legacy, Here’s Where To Stream Her Greatest Hits
The Greek Gods had Thalia, we had Catherine O’Hara—the Canadian comedy legend beloved for her wacky characters and made-up accents. Wielding an incredible 50-year career that began on the Canadian sketch comedy series Second City Television, O’Hara set the standard for improvisational characters, inspiring a generation of comedians, including Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Her superpower was range, giving us characters that were as ridiculous as they were sincere, making us giggle in one scene and ugly cry in the next. Her recent passing has inspired us to crack open the fruit wine and raise a glass to her most iconic performances, from Moira Rose to Kevin’s mum in Home Alone. Here’s where you can watch (and re-watch) some of her greatest hits.
Schitt’s Creek
One of the most popular sitcoms of all time, Schitt’s Creek follows the filthy-rich Rose family who after losing all their money, are forced to move to their sole remaining asset—a remote town they once bought as a joke: Schitt’s Creek. O’Hara plays Moira Rose, a former soap opera actress who wears dramatic, black and white fits, talks with a bizarre made-up accent and has affectionate names for her wigs. Schitt’s Creek’s final season cleaned up at the 2020 Emmy’s, sweeping all the major comedy awards including Best Lead Actress for O’Hara. If Heaven had a creek, it would be this one.

Home Alone
Before she was yelling “David!” in Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara was screaming “Kevin” in Home Alone, the 1990 banger starring an adorkable Macaulay Culkin. O’Hara plays Kate, Kevin’s guilt-ridden mother who accidentally leaves her son behind on a family trip. The plane scene where she’s trying to figure out what she forgot is iconic, casually sitting at 1.5M views on youtube.

Waiting for Guffman
You can’t do a round-up of Catherine O’Hara’s greatest hits without celebrating her work in Christopher Guest’s groundbreaking mockumentaries. Known as the granddaddy of the genre, Guest’s Waiting for Guffman is a perfect 84 minutes and follows an ensemble of eccentric small-town folk rehearsing for an amateur theatre production. Musical theatre kid or not, you’ll get a kick out of this.
Available to rent on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Released 36 years after the original, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brings back Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton for another kooky trip to the Afterlife. Delia Deetz is as watchable as ever, stealing scene after scene with her snappy quips and primal screams. The twist that happens halfway through with Delia’s character is wildly unexpected, yet it makes total sense, adding emotional depth to a film that could easily be written off as silly.

After Hours
Martin Scorsese's brilliant film takes place during one crazy night, following Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett’s desperate odyssey to get home after a bad date. Catherine O’Hara’s role is small but unforgettable, playing a Mister Softee ice cream truck driver named Gail who initially tries to help Hackett but ends up making his night worse. You know when you’re trying to remember a number and your annoying mate messes with you by yelling out completely different numbers? Yeah that’s Gail.

The Studio
Seth Rogen’s satirical show about the absurdity of movie making is a recent fave, with O’Hara acting as Rogen’s predecessor and mentor. The Studio dominated at the most recent Emmy Awards, setting a new record for the most wins ever by a comedy. The Apple TV series was O’Hara’s last on-screen performance, with Seth Rogen quoting her as the funniest person he’d ever seen on screen in a heartfelt instagram post just days after her passing.

Best in Show
God loves a terrier and so does Catherine O’Hara in Christopher Guest’s second mockumentary, Best in Show. This time focusing on the world of dog pageants, the film hangs out with canine contestants and their owners as they prepare for the annual Mayflower Dog Show. Before they played husband and wife on Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara and Eugene Levy were Cookie and Gerry Fleck, two proud parents of a Norwich terrier named Winky. Also starring Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch and Parker Posey, Best in Show will have you crying with laughter and rewatching clips for days.
