While Sydney’s been splashed with the rainbow for Mardi Gras and WorldPride of late, LGBTQIA+ Aussies are still facing regular discrimination and challenges; nearly 60% of our queer community has been discriminated against (La Trobe University), almost 75% of trans and gender diverse people in Australia were treated unfairly due to their gender identity in the past 12 months alone, and LGBTQIA+ Aussies are almost 50% more likely to experience harassment in the workplace (Diversity Council Australia).
Enabling inclusive workplaces is crucial to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community day to day, meaning we all have the opportunity to step up and show up for our LGBTQIA+ colleagues. To make this even easier, incredible Aussie LGBTQIA+ youth charity Minus18 and rainbow faves Skittles have created the Active Ally pledge for Aussies to formalise their support of the LGBTQIA+ community and learn more ways to create safe and inclusive spaces.
The online platform is an eight-part inclusion guide covering key LGBTQIA+ topics, sharing small steps you can take (like adding pronouns to your e-signature), and how to challenge negative language, with ongoing resources and updates shared with Active Allies to ensure you can continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community at work.
Head here to learn more about making LGBTQIA+ people safe and empowered at work and, if you’re in the position to, you can support Minus18 by donating here.
