Every once in a while, a movie comes along that simultaneously fills your heart and breaks it to pieces—and that is precisely what will happen when you watch Netflix’s newbie, Monster.
Based on Walter Dean Myers’s 1999 award-winning novel of the same name, the movie originally premiered at Sundance Film Festival back in 2018 but on 7 May, the whole world will be able to feast their eyes on this incredible flick.
It stars the supremely talented Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7, It Comes At Night) as Steve Harmon—a seventeen-year-old honor student whose world comes crashing down around him when he is charged with felony murder.
The film follows his dramatic journey from a smart, likeable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school, through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison. Yeah, like we said, it will rip your heart out.
Directed by celebrity doco maker, Anthony Mandler and executive produced by John Legend and Nas, the film is of course thought-provoking but is also cinematically stunning with New York displayed in all her raw concrete jungle beauty.
Monster also boasts a seriously stacked cast including the likes of Jennifer Hudson, John David Washington, A$AP Rocky, Lovie Simone and Jharrel Jerome.
