How Far Can Electric Bikes Travel?

While it depends on the individual specifications of the bike, most e-bikes are capable of reaching between 35-80 kilometres before they require a top-up. However, always remember that even with relaxed peddling, you’ll likely get many more kilometres out of each charge.

How Fast Can Electric Bikes Go?

Like any motorised form of transport, there are rules. In all states except NSW, e-bike motors must have a maximum power output between 200w to 250w. In NSW, the maximum power output is 500w. The motor of any e-bike must only be used while the rider is pedalling. While laws may differ across states, across Australia e-bikes are generally limited to a speed of 25km/h, and most motors will decrease their power as speed increases, eventually cutting off power at 25km/h.

No, you no longer need a licence to ride an electric bike in Australia. E-bikes with a maximum power output of 200 watts and a top speed of 25km/h are classified as bicycles rather than road vehicles in Australia.

While e-bikes are legal in Australia, there are restrictions on the locations where riders can take their bikes. Each state has different laws, but generally, e-bikes can be ridden on paths and roads where bikes are permitted like bicycle paths.
