Thousands of South West Sydney residents are about to get better public transport access, with a major expansion of bus services rolling out from July.

The changes include a brand-new route for Macarthur Heights, expanded services through Menangle and Menangle Park, and new connections to the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport.

The upgrades form part of a broader $452 million investment into bus services across Sydney's growing outer suburbs and regional growth areas.

Here's what to know.

Macarthur Heights Is Finally Getting Its First Bus Service

Since the suburb was established in 2013, residents of Macarthur Heights have had no public transport services.

That changes on July 5, when the new Route 849 officially launches.

The service will connect residents to key destinations including Macarthur Station, Western Sydney University, Campbelltown TAFE, Campbelltown Hospital and Macarthur Square.

Buses will run every 30 minutes between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week.

New Airport Bus Routes Are Also Launching

The new 849 service will launch alongside five new routes connecting communities across South West and Western Sydney to the new Western Sydney Airport.

The new routes will link:

  • Campbelltown (845)
  • Liverpool (825)
  • Leppington (860)
  • Mount Druitt (772)
  • Penrith (790)

Meanwhile, Route 840 between Campbelltown and Oran Park will be upgraded to run every 30 minutes throughout the week and extended through to Leppington.

Together, the changes aim to improve connections between growing residential areas, major transport hubs, education facilities and employment centres.

Menangle Services Are Getting A Major Boost

Residents in Menangle and Menangle Park will also benefit from expanded services.

Route 889, which previously operated up to 12 services a day across six days a week, will become a seven-day service and receive an additional 83 weekly trips.

The changes are expected to significantly improve public transport access for residents in some of Sydney's fastest-growing communities.

More Bus Services Are Rolling Out Across Sydney

The South West Sydney upgrades form part of a broader expansion of Sydney's bus network.

Recent additions include the return of the M52 service between Parramatta and the CBD via Ryde, alongside the restoration of Route 301 between Rosebery and Eastgardens earlier this year.

Since 2023, the NSW Government says it has added more than 1,300 weekly bus services across Greater Sydney, reduced the driver shortage and ordered hundreds of new buses to support future growth.
