The Best Things To Do In Nice In Autumn

By

I just returned from an October holiday in Nice, and I genuinely think it could be better than visiting in the summer. The streets are calmer, the air is cooler, and the queues are short—but it’s still warm enough for a dip in those stunning turquoise waters. If you’re wondering what to do in Nice during this season, there’s a perfect mix of culture, food, and coastal beauty to explore. From indulging in local eats to enjoying breathtaking views, here are the best things to do in Nice in autumn.

Explore Old Town (Vieux Nice)

A visit to Nice wouldn’t be complete without exploring the colorful streets of Old Town, one of the top things to do in Nice. The narrow alleys, pastel buildings, and lively squares like Place Rossetti make it the perfect place to wander. For a seriously good meal, I highly recommend L’atelier du Carnivore for a perfectly cooked steak, and don’t leave without grabbing gelato from Fenocchio.

Watch The Sunset

There’s something magical about watching the sun set over the Mediterranean, and in Nice, stunning sunsets are aplenty. Castle Hill is the best spot for panoramic views, but if you’re looking for a more relaxed option, find a bench along the Promenade des Anglais. For me, though, the ultimate sunset experience was sitting on the beach with a picnic—baguette, cheese, and a bottle of wine in hand. It’s simple, but it’s those moments that make Nice unforgettable.

Morning Coffee At Blend

If you're craving a coffee that rivals your favorite Aussie brew, start your day at Blend, a local gem nestled in Old Town. This café and vinyl shop is known for its expertly roasted specialty coffee and its laid-back, cool atmosphere. The combination of great coffee and an epic vinyl selection makes it a perfect spot to ease into your morning with good vibes. Hot tip: order one of their Salty French Toasts for the ultimate sweet and savoury combo.

Colline du Château (Castle Hill)

For one of the best views in the city, hike up to Colline du Château. Overlooking both the city and the sea, it’s the perfect place to get a sense of Nice’s natural beauty. There’s a few hundred steps to get to the top, but the panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean, the red rooftops of Old Town, and the bustling port are worth the climb. Plus, the peaceful gardens and waterfall at the top offer a relaxing escape from the city's hustle.

Bike Ride Along The Promenade Des Anglais

Trade a leisurely stroll for a scenic bike ride along the Promenade des Anglais. Stretching over 7 kilometers along the coast, this iconic promenade offers breathtaking views of the sea. You can rent a bike from several vendors along the promenade and take in the Mediterranean breeze as you glide past beach clubs, parks, and the famous hotels that line the promenade.

Port Lympia

Nice’s port, Port Lympia, is a hub of activity where yachts, fishing boats, and ferries dock. The pastel-colored buildings that line the harbor provide a postcard-perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many waterfront cafés for a drink with a view—and be sure to gawk at the enormous mega yachts.

Lunch At La Plongeoir

For a dining experience like no other, book a table at La Plongeoir, the iconic restaurant perched on stilts over the sea. You’ve likely seen this stunning spot featured on Instagram and TikTok, and it’s even better in person. Not only is the food fantastic, but the breathtaking setting makes for one of the most unique dining experiences in Nice. Just be sure to book in advance, as this popular venue fills up quickly.

Explore The Best Boulangeries

You can't visit Nice without indulging in the local boulangeries. Treat yourself to a freshly baked croissant, pain au chocolat, or a perfectly crusty baguette from some of the city's finest bakeries, like Maison De Celine, Michel Fiori and Bio Brod. Each offers its own take on classic French pastries, making it hard to resist sampling them all.

Coastal Path

Perhaps my favorite thing I did in Nice was the stunning Coastal Path, which starts just after the port and winds towards Villefranche-sur-Mer. This scenic route hugs the cliffs and offers a feast for the senses—breathtaking views of the turquoise waters below, the feel of fresh ocean spray, the sound of crashing waves, and the salty scent of the sea in the air. It’s the perfect way to experience the natural beauty of the French Riviera up close while getting a few extra steps in.

Seaside Drinks At Babel Babel

For evening drinks by the sea, head to Babel Babel, a Mediterranean bar and restaurant located right on the Promenade. This trendy spot serves up refreshing cocktails and natural wines with front-row views of the Mediterranean. Whether you’re catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet solo glass of wine with a good book, it’s the perfect place to unwind by the water and people-watch along the boardwalk.

Marché Aux Fleurs

For an authentic French experience, visit the Marché Aux Fleurs (Flower Market) on Cours Saleya. This vibrant market bursts with color, offering a beautiful array of fresh flowers, produce, and local specialties. The lively atmosphere and friendly vendors make it a must-see in Nice. The market is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9AM to 1PM, but be sure to bring cash, as some vendors don’t accept card payments.

La Place Masséna

As one of Nice's most recognizable landmarks, La Place Masséna is a bustling square that connects Old Town with the city’s more modern districts. This checkered square, surrounded by red ochre buildings and iconic statues, is lively day or night. Street performers often add to the vibrant atmosphere, making it a great place to stop and soak up the local culture and atmosphere.

Rooftop Dinner At BOCCA

For a romantic evening, enjoy a rooftop dinner at BOCCA, where you can dine on Mediterranean-inspired cuisine while watching the sun dip below the horizon. The views from this rooftop restaurant are some of the best in the city, and their hummus with tahini and red onion pickles is to die for.

Day Trip To Monaco

A quick train ride from Nice will take you to Monaco, one of the most glamorous spots on the French Riviera. Spend the day exploring the Monte Carlo Casino, admiring the luxury yachts at the harbor, or visiting the Prince's Palace. It’s a great activity for those spending three or four days in Nice, adding a touch of luxury to your vacation. Plus, the scenic ride along the coast is half the fun.

Unwind With A Glass Of Wine At Barrique

For a laid-back evening, head to Barrique, a cozy wine bar tucked away in Old Town. Known for its extensive selection of French wines and its intimate, relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The attentive wait staff will pour local favorites by the glass while you soak in the vibrant ambiance of the historic streets.

Wine Tasting In The Bellet Region

Wine lovers won’t want to miss a chance to visit the nearby Bellet region, known for its boutique vineyards and picturesque landscapes. Take a tour of a local vineyard to sample some of the region’s best wines, from crisp whites to rich reds, while learning about the winemaking process. It’s a peaceful escape just a short drive from Nice, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Matisse Museum

For art enthusiasts, the Matisse Museum in the Cimiez neighbourhood is a must-visit. This tranquil museum houses an impressive collection of works by Henri Matisse, one of Nice’s most celebrated artists. Set in a beautiful villa surrounded by gardens, the museum provides a quiet escape from the city’s hustle and offers insight into the life and work of the master of modern art.
