A Major Titanic Exhibition With 200+ Artefacts Is Making Its New Zealand Debut In Auckland

More than a century after the Titanic embarked on its ill-fated maiden voyage, one of the world's most famous ships is resurfacing in Auckland through a major international exhibition.

Titanic: The Human Story will make its New Zealand debut on Friday, 28 August, taking over the historic Smith & Caughey’s Building on Queen Street with more than 200 objects and personal artefacts from passengers and crew, alongside life-size recreations of the ship's interiors.

The internationally touring exhibition has already drawn more than three million visitors around the world, but its Auckland season will bring a selection of original personal artefacts to New Zealand for the first time.

What Is Titanic: The Human Story?

Rather than focusing solely on the scale and tragedy of the sinking, Titanic: The Human Story puts the people who travelled aboard the ship at the centre of the experience.

Visitors will move through a collection of photographs, handwritten letters, keepsakes and personal belongings revealing the individual stories and eventual fates of passengers and crew. Detailed, life-size recreations of the ship's interiors add another dimension, while an audio guide uses testimony, music and sound effects to bring the journey to life.

The exhibition is the result of years of research by Spanish exhibition producer Musealia and Titanic historian and author Claes-Göran Wetterholm, and has been designed to explore both the well-known story of the disaster and the lives behind it.

Among the biggest draws are more than 200 objects, including original personal artefacts belonging to passengers and crew that have never previously been displayed in New Zealand.

The roughly 80-to-90-minute experience retraces the Titanic's maiden and final voyage through these personal objects and recreated spaces, while unpacking some of the truths and myths that have surrounded the supposedly "unsinkable" ship for more than a century.

Where Is The Titanic Exhibition In Auckland?

Fittingly, the exhibition is setting up inside a piece of Auckland history itself.

You'll find it inside the Smith & Caughey’s Building at 253–261 Queen Street, as the heritage landmark continues its evolution into a destination for major cultural experiences.

Its central location will also put the exhibition close to Te Waihorotiu Station, with the season continuing through the anticipated opening of the City Rail Link station.

When Does Titanic: The Human Story Open In Auckland?

Titanic: The Human Story opens Friday, 28 August 2026, with various sessions available throughout its Auckland season.

Tickets start from NZ$40 for adults and NZ$32 for children, plus service fees, and the exhibition is suitable for all ages. Children under 15 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
