One of the admission-free events this Illuminate, City Lights is returning in 2026. And it's gonna be bigger, and much brighter than ever, thanks to more than 50 brand-new installations, as well as a new extended trail, so you'll have more parts of the city centre lit up to explore.
The trail will start from Government House, with visuals by French artist, Miguel Chevalier, projected across the landmark, before moving along North Terrace, and lighting up the inside of Bonython Hall. From here, the bright city lights will lead adventurers down the sweeping Rundle Street, and into Rymill Park, the trails new extension for 2026. In a triumphant finale, the walk eventually leads to Cygnus – a dreamy installation featuring 12 life-sized, lit-up swans performing a ballet across the the park's lake. Very Swan Lake-esque.
Digital Abyss
ILA | June 30 - July 19

In an Illuminate exclusive, Miguel Chevalier is bringing his immersive under-the-sea light experience to the city's ILA, with the French artist's Digital Abyss. Like the name suggests, the installation mimics a radiant seascape of interwoven colour, inspired by living plants and flora founder in the depths of the ocean, thanks to huge LED screens and gallery spaces with an evolving collage of glowing lightworks, AI plankton projections, and 3D sculptures.
But the hero piece is the three metres high by 24 metres-wide, interactive installation, Amphibolis (Evolution), projected across ILA’s curved LED screens and backed by David Attenborough-worthy music by composer, Jacopo Baboni-Schilingi. Book tickets here and live out your under-the-sea mermaid fantasy.

The Lost Art of Listening
Vitastatistix | July 9 - 11
One for the adults, The Lost Art of Listening wants you to settle in and forget about all the distractions going on in the world. Partially inspired by an Anna Goldsworthy article of the same name, the musical viewing was created by multidisciplinary musician, Hilary Kleinig - a performer, composer, creative producer and educator, alongside pianist, Erik Griswold, and creative coder and app developer, Steve Berrickand, and sees you sat in concentric circles around a prepared grand piano in a rare, still environment.
Not one for digitally-challenged, you'll then be asked to download an app that turns your own smartphones (something we should use less of really) into a synchronized "smartphone choir", with the phone-created soundscape combining with ready-madefield recordings, vintage synthesizers, and the cello to create a transformative, meditative experience. Intrigued? Book tix here.
Supersonic
Hindley Music Hall | July 18

After a bass-thumpingly successful event last year, Supersonic returns to Illuminate but more condensed and evolved, with its late-night offering now a single-venue, nothing-spared experience.
Taking over Hindley Street Music Hall for one night only, lovers of heaving bodies and deep bass can lock in for a pulse-pounding, stacked lineup of electronic artists spanning techno, house and genre-blurring club energy. Headliners include producer Skin On Skin, with his progressive blend of techno, house and alternative hip-hop; local DJ and producer KHUEVO, known for high-energy sets; and Sydney-based artist Moktar, whose work draws on his Egyptian heritage.
Not forgetting multidisciplinary artist Soju Gang, celebrated for herdynamic, genre-spanning sets, and fellow Melbourne-based DJ and producer Stev Zar. Get your tickets here.
