A One-Night Tokyo Sound Venue Is Landing In Auckland—And It’ll Be Gone By Sunrise
In Tokyo, perhaps more than in any other city, a setting sun marks a total transformation, a hard line between the responsibilities of the day, and the freedom of the night; a stark contrast between who we are when sunlit, and who we can become by moonlight.
At nightfall, we have a choice: carry on as we did in the day, stick to our routine and let the present slip past us, relegated to the mundane. Or, suspend the normal and embrace the dreamscape, taking back the potential of the night and revelling in the moment, in full knowledge that we will only experience it once.
This is the ethos of the Japanese belief ‘ichigo ichie’, which is often used in tea ceremonies and loosely translates to “one time, one meeting.” It speaks to the ephemerality of a moment that no encounter can ever be repeated. This philosophy has inspired a one-night-only event, inviting you to make the most of the moment in front of you before it’s gone.
Introducing... ICHI by Hyoketsu
Created by Hyoketsu, ICHI is a Tokyo-inspired event and sound experience featuring immersive design, high-fidelity audio and sets from some of the underground scene’s most exciting DJs. It will begin at sunset and disappear forever at sunrise.
This is an event to be experienced rather than documented. It’s been created around a simple idea: if every moment is unrepeatable, perhaps we should treat it that way.
Where And When It’s All Going Down
ICHI by Hyoketsu is happening at 3 East Street on 9 July 2026. Doors open at 7pm and will close when ICHI by Hyoketsu is full. Entry is not guaranteed, so don’t delay.
What To Expect
ICHI by Hyoketsu has been designed by none other than Angus Muir. Everything Muir touches seems to turn to atmospheric gold with a portfolio far too extensive to do justice in a sentence, but that spans everything from Darklight to Sala’s new reformer studio. Just know ICHI by Hyoketsu will be both culturally resonant and distinctly of the moment.
As for the decks, it’s an impressive lineup beginning with deep-listening by bFM’s own Aaron Yap (a.k.a. Psychic Glands) before the energy dials up to a club-level peak with Tokyo’s after-dark culture shapers Yes Chef! and headliner South London-raised, Tokyo-based DJ radio host and party organiser FU.
