Forget what you thought you knew about South Island wine, my loves.
While Central Otago gets the headlines, the wider Canterbury region—from the limestone soils of the Waipara Valley to the dramatic, volcanic slopes of the Banks Peninsula and the accessible estates of Greater Christchurch—has quietly cemented its status as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most scintillating regions to venture to for a tipple.
I’ve split the region into three (grape) stomping grounds—world-class Waipara Valley, the very great greater Christchurch/Selwyn District and beautiful Banks Peninsula/Akaroa. Home to pioneering families, globally celebrated organic producers, and cellar doors paired with two-hatted restaurants, these world-class wineries offer a full-spectrum experience: from spectacular coastal views to geeky deep-dives; luxurious vineyard escapes to laid-back, vintage tasting rooms.
Get ready to explore the best of the region: here are my nine sublime wine spots—the best Christchurch wineries for a tasty tipple
Waipara Valley / North Canterbury Wineries
Pegasus Bay Winery
263 Stockgrove Road, Waipara, Amberley, North Canterbury
Image credit: Pegasus Bay Winery | Facebook
I'll begin with an absolute icon. A juggernaut, if you will.
Pegasus Bay Winery is the first name that comes to anyone enthusiast's lips when you ask them about wineries in the region. And for good reason. For over fifty years, the Donaldson family has been pioneering the Waipara viticultural scene, producing everything from world-class pinot noirs to rieslings and a great many styles in between.
The winery itself is pure elegance. Wander here on a sunny, summery day and you'll be greeted by sweeping gardens and splendid architecture that echoes the great working European estates. A win-win for any wine connoisseur making their way to the valley with a thirst—it’s an immersion in old-world charm, backed by a history of sustainable viticulture. And with a modest tasting fee of just $20 a head (fully refunded if you purchase six bottles or more), you can happily explore their back vintages with a full cellar door experience that won't necessitate a weekend call to your bank manager.
Of course, by now you're tummy's rumbling. Look no further than Pegasus' refined deli, which offers a selection of local bites. Grab a table or a couch indoors by the fire if it's chilly out. If you're visiting in the warmer months, then pack it all into one of their handwoven baskets, grab a bottle of whatever tasted best downstairs, and head out to explore.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~45-50 minutes
Pair With: A handwoven basket of deli treats, which you can take out with you to find your private slice of paradise amongst their grounds.
Greystone Wines
8 Vineyard Lane, Waipara, North Canterbury
Another name that pops up again and again is Greystone—a modern standard-bearer for Waipara wine country. Here, the Thomas family embraces a sincere commitment to certified organic and regenerative farming, with a history rooted deeply in the Omihi limestone soils.
The family saw the "promise of excellence" in an old Omihi Hills sheep farm over twenty years ago, and their role as stewards of the land—drives global innovation in sustainable winemaking—has reaped its rewards. They consistently deliver acclaimed, precise wines that are celebrated globally—like their award-winning Chardonnay and their Vineyard Ferment Pinot Noir.
But the Greystone experience doesn't end with the glass; their on-site restaurant is a major destination. Led by the dynamic partnership of Executive Chef Cameron Woodhouse and Head Chef Théo Dubost (who brings Michelin-starred training from France!), the food is a celebration of North Canterbury's bounty, which one can enjoy by way of an ever-changing à la carte menu or truly indulge in through the 'Trust the Chef' four-course journey—all designed to perfectly harmonise with their organic drops.
Love it so much you want to stay forever? One of their PurePods might be what you're after.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~50-55 minutes
Pair With: A phenomenal 'Trust the Chef' lunch.
Black Estate
614 Omihi Road, Waipara, North Canterbury
Where architecture meets agriculture: the sleek, black-clad Black Estate is a striking minimalist statement that sits like a piece of obsidian atop the verdant Omihi slopes.
Such a sight sets a sophisticated tone from the moment you arrive. What will cement this feeling of perfection is the Naish family’s ethical commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. Offering an ambience of a refined, relaxed quality, this is a place where the loveliness of the vistas—stretching all the way to the grand Southern Alps—is rivalled only by what's in the glass.
The core Black Estate experience revolves around the exceptional on-site restaurant, led by Chef Olly Le Maitre and his team, which has proudly held Two Hats from the Cuisine Good Food Guide since 2019. The menu champions local, organic produce, perfectly complementing their three single-vineyard wines. You can opt for a walk-in tasting ($25) and light snacks at the cellar door (open seven days), or book a private tour and tasting at their Netherwood Winery nearby. For the ultimate escape, book their beautiful B&B studio room right on the Home vineyard.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~40-45 minutes
Pair With: A Two-Hat lunch and delicious views.
The Boneline
376 Ram Paddock Road, Amberley, Waipara, North Canterbury
Image credit: The Boneline | Instagram
The history of The Boneline is literally written in the earth, named for the nearby K-T Boundary line—the geological evidence of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. This curious connection is reflected in fossil-themed labels that adorn a selection of boutique wines expertly produced by two partnering families.
The Tutton Sienko and Hill partnership is another case of Waipara pioneership. They planted their first vines on the property’s four unique river terraces in 1989. The Boneline excels in cool-climate varietals—a powerful Pinot Noir and precise Pinot Blanc—with clear focus on the tasting experience. The perfect stop for any wine geek with a set of wheels and a few eager taste buds, their cellar door experience is much like the wine served—excellent in its curated intimacy. Enjoy a simple sharing-style food menu prepared by local friend Kate McMillan, and a vineyard walkway with 22 signs that detail the property's unique geology and vine health.
Pair With: A geeky deep dive into paleontology.
Greater Christchurch / Selwyn Wineries
Tussock Hill Vineyard
210 Huntsbury Avenue, Cashmere, Christchurch, Canterbury
Image credit: Tussock Hill | Instagram
The history of Tussock Hill is defined by its dramatic elevation—it's one of the only wineries producing from Port Hills fruit—granting its spectacular, top-of-the-world views across the plains and out to sea.
Up on the hill, you'll find a holistic, multi-generational family operation focused on organic and regenerative agriculture. The wines are sourced from two distinct sites: the Home Vineyard, nestled on the aforementioned rocky Port Hills and a second sun-soaked plot in the prestigious Waipara region. They employ unique, sustainable practices, including grazing Kunekune pigs and Baby Doll sheep to manage the land.
Tussock's cellar door restaurant—its modern architecture perfectly situated to, and situated on, the hills—is open Wednesday to Sunday and is famous for its seasonal sharing plates that feature local Canterbury produce, including greens from their own organic vegetable garden. For the ultimate escape, book one of their stunning Vineyard Retreats accommodation, which features luxurious fit-outs, private balconies overlooking the vines, and spectacular outdoor baths—all just 15 minutes from the city centre.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~15 minutes
Pair With: A commanding view of the city and sunset.
Straight 8 Estate
2321 Main South Road, Burnham, Canterbury

Now, if you're like me and sometimes don't feel entirely in place at more refined affairs, then this next option—an accessible, anti-pompous gem on the outskirts of the city—has to be a must-visit.
With a quirky history rooted in a love for classic American V8s, Straight 8 Estate champions a wonderfully casual approach to wine. The location—right off State Highway 1—means you’re guaranteed the easiest possible drop-in experience. Taking its name in homage to the owners'—James Shand and Mary Jamieson—family heirloom, a 1935 Light Sports Railton (which you might spot parked inside the cellar itself), they produce a straightforward, high-quality range of single-vineyard wines. Rieslings, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Rosé, all from vines first planted in the 80s.
Their part-cellar door, part vintage garage (well, just for the one family heirloom) is open seven days a week and maintains a relaxed atmosphere, often featuring Bella the vineyard dog. While Straight 8 doesn't have a full restaurant, they offer local Whitehorse Cheeses and Wigram Craft Beer to complement your tasting. What's more, James and Mary are even happy for you to BYOP—bring your own picnic.
For a unique weekend escape, book one of their tiny houses (Riesling Cabin or Vintners Retreat) available right on the vineyard.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~25-30 minutes
Pair With: Classic cars and a charming tiny house retreat.

Nestled among the vines, just 20 minutes from Christchurch and owned by Philip Caunter for over 23 years, the winery focuses on warm hospitality, fresh food, and creating memorable moments. They are proudly the home of Summer Love Sparkling, their signature wine made for "sunshine, laughter, and sharing celebrations."
Their restaurant & cellar door is open Thursday to Sunday for relaxed brunch, lunch, and afternoon platters, all designed to pair beautifully with their range of nine boutique wines. Beyond casual dining, Melton Estate is built for events, with flexible spaces like the modern pavilion hosting everything from family celebrations and weddings to conferences for up to 150 guests.

Banks Peninsula / Akaroa Wineries
French Peak Vineyard
79 French Farm Valley Road, French Farm, Canterbury
Image credit: French Peak | Facebook
Cradled in the bosom of an extinct volcano, French Peak is the oldest vineyard on the Banks Peninsula.
Having planted its first vines all the way back in '89, it's now owned by a Scottish family—Simon and Caroline, who relocated from Singapore—the boutique vineyard focuses on organic and biodynamic practices to produce award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rosé. Offering stunning views of the Ōnawe Peninsula, with the ocean just 700m away, you can practically taste the salt spray.
For a uniquely fun experience, try "Who Stole The Grapes?"—a vineyard-wide, escape room-style puzzle guided by clues and the resident cat, Kumara. But for the ultimate escape, stay in either The Wagon (a romantic retreat with an outdoor hot tub) or The Loft (a spacious family apartment).
A charming, boutique slice of Banks Peninsula paradise, French Peak is the type of destination that makes you believe you've stumbled upon some sort of gorgeous, hidden secret.

Akaroa Winery At Takamatua Valley Vineyards
59 Long Bay Road, Akaroa, Banks Peninsula
Image credit: Akaroa Winery at Takamatua Valley Vineyards | Facebook
Dreams of Tuscany? When you get within a whisker of Akaroa, take a sharp left down Long Bay Road. Thank me later.
Nestled on the north-facing slopes above the historic Akaroa village, with a history tracing back to the early days of Akaroa wine, Akaroa Winery at Takamatua Valley Vineyards is a must-visit before you hit the main township. Reminiscent of an earthly villa plucked straight from the rolling hills of far more Mediterranean shores—complete with a gorgeous, sun-drenched courtyard and vine-covered pergola–this is a truly pioneering estate that's Certified Organic.
Since 2001, Takamatua has been influenced by a unique blend of cultures: Timberly Hughes (San Francisco) and her Kiwi husband, Allan Ransley. This bicultural ownership is reflected in their wines, which are noted for their rich, fruit-dominant style, resembling those from California's North Coast. The rugged, volcanic terroir of the Banks Peninsula is key to their wines' unique character and finesse, including their early production of Pinot Gris, which is blended with Gewürztraminer for aromatic lift. Their tasting room and cellar door are open daily and offer views of the harbour.
Takamatua offers a full tasting range and is well-equipped to provide excellent platters and light bites, making it a refined pit stop—a chance to soak in a bit of culture before coasting into the French-influenced spirit of little old Akaroa.
Drive Time From Christchurch: ~1 hour 25 minutes
Pair With: Exploring the French heritage of Akaroa.
