Australia, your prayers have been answered. One of the world’s most acclaimed musicals, Hamilton, is coming down under.
Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the news that the award-winning musical will be having its Australian premiere at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in March 2021. Yes, that feels like an age away, but we’re already halfway through 2019 so we’ve only got just over a year and a half to wait.
The Australian production is yet to be cast, and there are certainly some big shoes to fill given the original 2015 Broadway production garnered a record 16 Tony nominations and racked up 11 wins—only second The Producer’s 12 gongs.
In case you’re not familiar with Hamilton, it’s a musical about the life of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, and the incredible lyrics written by Miranda are rapped and sung in an R&B, hip hop and soul style. It’s certainly not your standard musical, and that’s why everyone loves it.
You’ll definitely want to put your name on the waitlist, given the show still sells out on Broadway. Heck, it racked up US$30 million in advance ticket sales prior to its opening, so you might just have to beg, borrow and steal your way into the first round of performances. Given the music is Barack Obama’s favourite, it’ll be worth it.
