The Gold Coast is coming to life this week, with splashes of colour and licks of paint covering laneways, walls, fences and footpaths and, well, any uncoloured surface.
The first inaugural Miami Street Art Festival, SURFACE, is set to cement Miami as the local arts and creative hub of the Coast, as visual artists and creatives make their mark. This incredible eight-day street art festival will see the streets of Miami flooded with vibrant free art activations from 4 to 11 July and we are hyped. The bustling Miami neighbourhood is an artists playground—from dining nooks to breweries and co-working spaces, there are boundless surfaces to brighten.
Many of Miami’s visual gems will be blessed with a lick of paint, including Miami Marketta and Burleigh Gold Coast Motels iconic highway wall. If our neighbourhood getting a revamp wasn’t cool enough you can also watch the brilliant artists at work. Swing by during the artists’ dedicated paint sessions and you’ll see them at work and watch their masterpieces come to life. Now that’s what we call art with a show.
So where should you hit up to sneak a peek of these street artists doing their thang? Miami Marketta is turning the big 1-0 this year, and in typical Marketta fashion, they are opening their doors and redesigning their iconic laneway, as they welcome back many of the founding artists to revamp their original designs. Over 100 sqm has been dedicated to showcasing the art of local artists, photographers and illustrators and is set to be a major highlight of the festival.
Events will be taking place all across Miami throughout the eight-day festival, meaning there’s plenty to do, see and get involved in during SURFACE. Wander through the streets of Miami and be wowed by the stunning fence line exhibition, which spans over two kilometres from Hillcrest Parade to Lemana Lane, and features work by over thirty talented artisans. From much-loved local legends like Kiel Tillman and Christine Slabb to up-and-coming creatives, this is an incredible chance to see gifted street artists in their element.
Feeling inspired by all this artsy talk? Unleash your inner Picasso at a variety of Sip + Paint sessions or Sip + Sculpt Pottery workshops, where you can channel your creativity into creating a masterpiece (or at least attempting to). Hit up Miami Marketta on a Wednesday night, where you can join the artists for a sundown drink, while muralists transform the laneway around you. Pretty dang cool, if we do say so.
